So age and hereditary issues have led to me going on statins
Cholesterol had risen to just over 7 from 6 in recent months with no lifestyle change
I'm on 40mg atorvastatin....
Have noticed a few things like bodyache and forgetfulness but not sure if that's being mid 50s or the tablets
Can I ask if Amy of you are on them do they work and what side effects have you had

Are they worth it ? I've read some bad stuff have to say

I’m on same as you, have been for the last 10 years or so.

Had quite high cholesterol and lifestyle changes didn’t make much difference, grandad died of stroke/heart issues and dad had a quad bypass at 60 so hereditary problems.

Have had no problems with them and has brought the cholesterol down. Had a bit of cramp to begin with but I drink a lot of water now and seems to have cured the problem.

Atorvastatin for me too; no noticeable side effects. They got my reading down from over 9 to about 3 in no time (with all constituent readings in the correct ranges) and I seem to be staying around that level now which is good.

I started on Atorvastatin 40mg, but after 9 months I started getting a rash and itching after taking them, my doctor changed me on 20 mg Rosuvastatin, been on these for 2 yrs now with no side effects.

Atorvastatin are cheaper to make so they try and start patients on them first.

I significantly improved my cholesterol ratio(and overall cardiovascular risk score) with changes to diet.
I dropped sweet treats and started to eat a lot of salmon, avacado, olive oil, pomegranate juice and nuts(especially almonds).
I wasn't keen to go down the statins route if I could help it(the default response from my local GP).

Some of us had no choice, Im 60 yrs old, 5"11, 12st, I go to the gym 5 days a week, run 3 times a week, never eat junk food, I'm mainly on a mediterranean diet, fish, veg.etc...

I had no body fat and thought I was fit, and living a healthy life, then 3 yrs ago for no reason, I started sweating when only walking about, went to the docs, took bloods, and to my surprise I had a very high Cholesterol reading.

I was sent to a specialist in Lancaster, he said my lifestyle was really good. however, I could have a diet of lettuce and water and still have high cholesterol, it's part of my DNA... he said I had no choice but to go on Statins, my Cholesterol is now normal, and I continue to live a healthy life.

I was on simvastatin for a good while but eventually gave it up as I was screaming with cramp in my legs each morning.

Doctor produced all the horror stories

we now know I've had at least two heart attacks one in 1999 and one in 2019. The second one was whilst in hospital and I got consultant, houseman and senior nurse all running into my cubicle saying "are you alright ?" You've had a heart attack. I replied "don't be daft I'm reading a book" as I was.

I'm not a lover of Statins. I think they are over - rated

I've been on them since Coronary in 2011.
Now you may think from my posts that they've really ****ed me up, but they haven't affected me that I am aware of. But cholesterol is just over 2 and has been for many years now. And no hint of angina.

Atorvastatin. No obvious side effects but it gets more difficult to separate one drug from another once you're on a few. Age (70) doesn't help either

Mine was a little high at around 5 last year, but a check in Nov has shown it go to about 6.3. I have started taking supplements for Omega 3s and 6s and eat salmon once a week, and also take plant sterols which apparently help.

Have cut back on the booze a little too, but probably not nearly enough

Also exercising a bit more too with an intense 5 a side game once a week and an hour's badminton, on top of trying to walk more rather than get lifts/take car

I'll go re-test in a month or two and see if they've made a difference, and if not I reckon it'll be statins for me too.

I used to get really bad cramps(mainly at night) and they were sometimes as bad as a muscle tear that I could still feel a week later. Started taking 350mg magnesium at bed time. I would say in last 4 year I have had only mild cramp about 3-4 times and never the severe ones I got before. Told two female friends who also suffer and they both take them and it has solved their cramp issues.
