Engel

Remember that goal saving tackle last week that confirmed Rav to be our greatest player since Mannion?

Well Engel did one of those yesterday. Still, if your brain isn't capable of operating at a level higher than 1-bit, then sure, he's the worst player ever.

Give over, Engel is a poor player and my brain - like most folk on here - works just fine.

Sometimes the first time pass is very effective and helps us break quickly. He needs to learn when to play the first time pass and when to take a touch as quite often he's just giving the ball away cheaply.

Giles has been a bench warmer in the PL for most of the season.

Giles is by far the better player. I’m not convinced any of the current LBs on our books are the answer next season.
Giles has one assist in 810 minutes of championship games. 80.4% passing, with 1.3 key passes per game. Averages 1 tackle1.1 interceptions, 2.5 clearances and no blocks.
Engel has 3 assists and 2 goals in 2200 mins. 78.9% passing, with 0.8 key passes. Averaging 2 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 1.7 clearances and 0.2 blocks.
People are remembering Giles with Akpom etc. there’s very little evidence to suggest that Giles is a far better player

Have we ever had a player who tries to get rid of the ball as soon as they get it as Engel?

Some of his first time passes decisions yesterday were beyond mental.

Has some good attributes but he is one of the most frustrating players I have ever watched for Boro.

Think he has to be back up next season.
Yes, Engel is very much a confidence player. The thing that I don’t understand is; 5-3-2 formation is all about the wing backs and, yes, first half we used jones a lot but when it wasn’t on what we didn’t do was move the ball across the 3 centre backs to Engel as quickly as possible to stretch Blackburn….the wing backs are key and we only used jonesy, nowhere near enough down the left flank….to keep them guessing and stretched 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙈

In my opinion Giles is a better player. He was a very important cog last season. We were all gutted when we didn’t get him back which tells its own story. He also did the business for a not so great Cardiff team. In the right setup he is a superb left back at this level. Not sure he’s PL quality.

I like Engel by the way Good pro 100% blood and thunder player. He is however very inconsistent. Maybe he improves but right now he can be a liability at times.

We kept looking to switch it across to Jones during the 1st half but they read it every time.

Should have tried switching it to Engel a few times, to catch them out.

None of that I disagree with however, what you are discounting here is that he made the difference against Norwich and had the courage to get up there and scored thus changing the course of the game towards Boro.
Credit goes to the lad and he has been influential in assists previously too so whilst he can be frustrating to watch him on occasion he also has had some quality moments. For a lad coming to a new country and stepping up a level to boot, we ought to be able to see those excellent moments for us and throw our support at him because he has the potential to be very good.
IMHO

Exactly this. You would expect improvement over the first season or two for a young player moving to a different country with different team mates and playing at a higher level.

He has done remarkably well for his first season and the stats bare that out.

Firstly I am not sure what our fans expect. In our current setup put Giles at left back and he would struggle in this team.

Engel gets through a lot of work, never hides and contributes plenty. Yes he has a couple of mistakes in him most games, as does most of our squad yet engel is picked out because people made their minds up after a very dodgy start in the team at the begining of the season when we were bedding in 3/4's of the team.

The recruitment team are crap ergo engel is crap.

Before villa were sniffing around Rogers he got a fair bit of flack and was used to bash the recruitment team too.

Its noticeable how engel wants to play first time balls and to me thats a positive. However on Saturday he was well off with his passing.

I think its in no small part down to coaching and instructions he is following.

I have noticed for a while that if he get the ball when he is positioned beyond the midfielder, and only has the defender in front of him, he will be far more positive and look to either cross the ball or will take the defender on.

If he gets the ball when he has the midfielder in front of him, he almost always passes it backwards or sideways, and very rarely takes the midfielder on. To be fair, he seems as frustrated by this as most of the fans are.

i think when we play wingbacks his natural passing lane to the flanks is none existent
There is less support on the left when you compare it to the right, particularly when Jones plays.

He usually has to take on the defender or play it inside to the attacking mids.

He does need to cut out his suicidal passes at the back. It's not that they are a bit short or a bit away from the intended target, sometimes the ball is played straight to an opposition player. I can't imagine that is too difficult to coach for though.

Engel is ok in my opinion. A decent champo player. We were pretty dire as soon as Forss went off, but still would have won if Silvera hadn't done an airshot a 10yr old would be embarassed about. I don't think Saturday was down to Engel.

Of course Saturday was not down to Engel, or Silvera, or any single player.
It was a pitiful team performance.
They just happen to be typically poor players who keep on making the same mistakes/have the same continuing weaknesses.
