Phil Foden

100% agree. Foden was awful and his massive supporters on here know it this morning. Pep gets the best out of a one dimensional player but for England when you’re nous, class and intelligence needs to come forward to evolve your game to the circumstances and style of play but foden isn’t bright enough or talented enough to adjust and shine. IMHO

Tell me you’ve never watched a game of football without telling me you’ve never watched a game of football

It’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read on this forum, and as you all know the standard is incredibly high

Totally agree. Gallagher is awful and playing out of position 🙈. Southgate for me, is a bit of a coward not picking mainoo.
I just don’t like Southgate as a manager because you have to be innovative and bold to win anything
Surely he has to try multiple options in these two games and Brazil is a tough one for Marino to debut. He’ll probably play against Belgium.

What he actually did is only play one holding player in rice and he isn’t even a dedicated CDM really. It’s what you lot asked him to do repeatedly and it didn’t work against a good team. We need two holding players against the best teams

The reaction to a narrow loss and mediocre performance has been ridiculous. Hoofing this 'debate' is testament to this.

England will be fine come the summer. The run up to the world cup was much poorer.

France lost to bad Germany at home, do we think they're no longer contenders and Mbappé is worse than Dembele?

Germany are not a bad side...that's just stupid.

A team with Kroos, Wirtz, Havertz, Ter Stegen, Musiala, Gündogan and Rüdiger in it are not bad at all. Wirtz is a superstar in the making...Xavi Alonso is seeing to that 👌🏻.

And the Germany that England beat wasn’t bad either neuer, rudiger, kimmich, kroos, Werner, muller, havertz. We just performed better than them for once

Exactly. Germany might not be at their traditional levels the last few tournaments, but they have some quality players still. With them being at home in the European Championships, they will go far. I fully expect them to make the Semi Final at least.

Playing the shape we did on Saturday you need two sitting midfielders really, that's not rocket science or even using hindsight. If you want the best out of Bellingham, Foden and Saka the three of them will be playing high up the pitch so you need to protect the back 4.

Saturday will have hopefully been a good learning experience for Southgate and the team, we need to be better when we lose the ball and opposition counter attack. We were far too open against Brazil.

Gallagher isn't a bad player but he gave the back 4 very little protection and his natural instinct seems to be trying to get involved high up the pitch. Declan Rice is playing more like an 8 now for Arsenal as well which is fine but you need someone to play the number 6 role alongside Rice (especially against the stronger teams).

From what I've seen of Mainoo he looks like a similar player to Rice, he looks like a bit of an all rounder. Both of them could sit but he looks capable of joining in high up the pitch as well. I think they are capable of playing together but against a top team you'd need them to be very disciplined in their positioning.

Rico Lewis is the future in the middle with rice. Just a shame he is at city wasting his career because he is more ready than mainoo but pep doesn’t play him enough for Southgate to pick him
Any other club and Rico would be in the first 11

Absolutely agree. Too many people want to play Haarlem globetrotter football. They think just put all the attack minded players on the pitch and we will outscore the other side. It just doesn’t work like that. A well organised team will exploit your weaknesses and if you’ve got poor support and shape for the defence then you will struggle from the break and out of possession in general.

It’s basic stuff and grown bored of explaining it to people who’ve read some idiot journalist in the sun Shouting for Bellingham alongside rice and Foden in front of them. Its complete tactical naivety to think a good side won’t play through that

This has just had me in stitches.

Judging a player on a friendly against Brazil....beyond laughable.
I’d judge on his champ league performances. It’s noticeable that he only started on game after the hours stages for city and he got the hook after 60 in that without doing much.

He has great technical ability and works hard but does struggle to impact the biggest games. Maybe by the next World Cup we will start to see him really imposing on the big games

Champions League?

This season, he's averaging a goal every 119 minutes in the competition and has started 5 out of the 8 games so far. He was rested in the away game against Young Boys and came off the bench in the final group game against Red Star Belgrade (games in which City had the luxury of benching him, to keep him fresh for the league campaign - he wasn't 'dropped') and then the only other game he's not started was the 2nd leg against Copenhagen, when the game was pretty much a dead rubber due to the first leg away win (in which he scored and assisted in by the way), so again, Pep decided to keep him fresh, along with KDB, Bernardo, Walker, Ake.

The main reason he didn't get much game time last season was due to his injury and then finding that Grealish and Mahrez were undroppable. However, as soon as the opportunity arose (final when KDB picked up an injury) it was Foden who Pep looked to from the bench.

There is no surprise this season, that he has started the most amount of games he's ever done in a season and his performances and returns have been fantastic. Other than Rodri, he's arguably been Man City's best and most important player this season. He's scored some big big goals. Most recently a brace against their rivals, when losing to go 2-1 up. Then prior to that he got the only goal in a 1-0 Bournemouth win (away), he scored a hattrick in a 3-1 away win against Brentford, again when losing,.

Anyone who doesn't rate Foden and doesn't think he should be in the starting 11 for England, seriously needs to give up football and choose a different sport to tunnel their energy.

Between him, Saka & Jude, the future and squad should be built around the 3. They are 3 of the biggest talents in world football and we are very lucky that they are all English.

he is at city wasting his career
🤦‍♀️

Dear me there's some rubbish on this thread!

Give someone access to statistics combine with the inability to understand how statistics work and an unshakable belief in their own "vision" and this what we get!

In short, what Marv said above ☝️

Germany have some good (very good even) players but they have no striker. It's difficult to get even the best players to play effectively with such a big weakness.

i dont think anyone on here would doubt Foden's quality, he's a marvellous player but i just dont see him being that effective in this england team.

For me this is our problem... "Between him, Saka & Jude, the future and squad should be built around the 3".

Saka is the most direct and causes the most problems he has to start on the right.
Bellingham is probably the best player in the world right now and gives us a bit of everything start in the 10 role.
Foden for me is at his best on the right but shouldn't start before Saka.
Theres no point shoehorning all our best players in the team we have seen before this doesnt work.

I think it works better when we counter to have pace on the right and left, also when kane drops deep they can get in behind. Rashford and Sterling not on form but they give us that pace.

I just feel theres something missing with Foden at international level. Maybe he's used to constant possession at city so doesn't have to constantly go looking for the ball. He needs to be more involved in a team that doesn't keep the ball very well.

Phil Foden has been the best player in the premier league this season. He will play left wing for us in the first game with the license to drift inside and link with Bellingham and will be absolutely fine. I back him to have a great tournament.

And this proves your lack of knowledge on Foden.

He is best as a #10 behind the striker, on the half turn. His next best position is off the left. And then finally, he can play off the right, to cut in on his left.

Putting him as a #10 when that's Jude's best position would be silly, and we can't sacrifice a spot in midfield to play 2 #10s.

Therefore, Foden from the left is a very easy solution.
