Ayling

He had a shakey early few games, but once he got rid of the ring rust, he's been superb. He's a better all round player than Smith, who might not even be fit and back on form at the start of next year anyway.

He's already assimilated into our style of play., so he could hit the ground running on day one. At his age he isn't going to be on huge wages, and no transfer fee either. Get it done as signing number one in May

No brainer if smith has gone downhill, if i had to choose i would prefer Smith but he’s suffered a bad injury.

Whilst i wouldn't be adverse to his signing, it's similar to the situation of us giving Howson "one more year" and him being a key player every!

If we are unable to sign a younger, long term option for that position, its more a reflection of bad recruitment if Ayling is the best Choice.

Is there an argument after this season, to not tweak every single position on day one? Which would make Ayling a great signing.

if we replaced 3 players on day one, got another CF to challenge Lath, It wouldn't be back to trying to get players knowing each other again.
If the back 4 and keeper have already trained and are fully fit, that helps too.

This looks about right to me.

Although I actually quite like Engel, and Azaz might hit the ground running as our number 10 after a good pre season with us

Getting few assists and can also defend.Good to have around for the young lads. Also give howson another year been outstanding.

Ayling has been great once he was back up to speed. He looks quicker now too!

The lad has lost his pace completely - we need young athletic players throughout the side as we’ve been distinctly pedestrian this season

He has definitely improved but to be fair after his first few games that wasn’t hard. He was absolutely dreadful. With Smith on the books, I would prefer the club to be signing a young, hungry right-back who goes straight into the team. I think Ayling is just another short-term solution tbh. As much as I like his attitude, I would hope Boro are looking for something a bit more longer term tbh.
