20 years on interview with Gibson

So he's determined to see us win another trophy he's going to have to invest for that like. I just don't get why these comments weren't added onto the season ticket launch

Gibson has always known that saying things about his ambition, wanting to win things, wanting to get promoted, wanting to be back in Europe etc is what most fans want to hear and is, for most, enough.

It’s great that he still wants all that stuff, we all do, but I don’t think he really has any idea how to actually achieve any of it without being able to out-spend everybody. I don’t think any of us do.

And here we have a perfect example of why he is less likely to talk to the fans. A quote taken out of context and misinterpreted.

What he said "we WANT to smash the league"

What people heard "we absolutely guarantee that we are GOING to smash the league"
There comes a time though where he has to face up to the fact that the club's PR (including how/when/what he says to fans) needs to be improved though.

He can't just never speak to the fans because in the past he's said emotive/passionate stuff without considering how it might be perceived. Or, he can, but he can't wonder why the fans criticise him for never speaking.

Why wasn't this quoted in the earlybird renewal?

“It’s been a challenging season in some respects, but I genuinely believe we’ve put some really strong foundations in place that will help take us forward in the next few years. If we can build on that, who knows where we might get to?" SG

not exactly what you want to hear, not sure what these 'really strong foundations are' (certainly not the majority of our signings this season) but it would have certainly have been more welcomed to what was originally sent out

I suspect in hindsight, he wishes he had, hence why he's done this interview with the Echo.

This is it for me, the guy is ploughing money into the club on a daily basis just to keep us semi-competitive and given wealth and financial resource is by far the biggest influencer to success I'm not sure what some fans think we're need to do that we aren't already. I certainly don't see a silver bullet scenario here.
Smash the league I'm still waiting
And this is an example of why Gibson most likely doesn't engage with the media more often, misquoted and used as a rod to beat him with.

He is keeping us semi-competitive, and we're all grateful for that. But it can't be denied that our 'performance' over the last (really) 18 years has been pretty disappointing, or at the very least 'uneventful'. 3 unsuccessful play-offs, 1 promotion and 2 relegations is all we have to show for it.

For me, its understandable that people are feeling negative when the season is over not long after Valentine's Day. Beating Chelsea at home was arguably a terrible result in hindsight!

I think we've performed more or less consistently with clubs of a similar resource really.

People always point to the Brighton's and Brentford's as a measure of how badly we've done, but then there's always the likes of Bolton, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday's too.

There's more get it 'wrong' than 'right', because by it's very nature football dictates only a minority of clubs can achieve success
