New Zealand need 6 to win with a ball remaining in a one day international against Aus. Trevor Chappell bowling. Greg his brother and captain instructs him to bowl underarm along the ground to prevent Brian McKechnie from hitting a six.

Richie Benaud was incensed after the match and said it was one of the worst things he had ever seen on a cricket field.

Kiwis brought out an under arm deodorant later that year called ”Chappelli”

Seem to remember Australian prime mimister at the time getting involved and unhappy with Greg Chappell.

As someone who doesn’t follow cricket, what’s been done wrong here? Didn’t it just prevent the other team from winning?
It’s not the ‘spirit’ of cricket .Cricket prides itself on gamesmanship in a dignified manner . Most nations except Australia would rather not win than win ‘badly’ on a technicality.

Just been on One News here. Kiwis have never forgotten it.

Earlier in the Australian innings Greg Chappel was brilliantly caught by Martin Snedden on the boundary. Chappell refused to walk and umpires said they didn't see the catch properly so couldn't give him out. Tv replays showed it was a good catch. Chappell went on to score well.

Indeed. However, in footballing terms it would be a bit like rushing to the other end and scoring, when the opposition conceded possession by putting the ball out for your injured player. (Just not the done thing)!

the fanny ran off the pitch before the NZ batsman could give him the kicking he deserved
