60mph in roadworks

Good decision, nothing worse than having massive truck sat up your **** because they think the 50 mph doesn't apply to them.

Be interesting to see how many are actually restricted to 56mph

The 20 miles of works on the M27 between Pompey and Southampton is awful.
And HGVs invariably don't keep to speed limits through motorway roadworks. They're quick to slag off car drivers, but some of the so called professional driver cadre are anything but.
Had one justify speeding by saying that car drivers don't have the schedules to keep that they do.

My dad was an ex trucker and he knows some companies remove or override the speed limiters. Usually the smaller trucking firms. Those who own their own trucks usually too.

Given Highways England who control the "active" speed limits appear to enjoy making motorways 60mph for 1 of around several thousand non reasons this just seems to be a levelling up for a new National Speed Limit

The introduction and expansion of the Smart Motorway system is more than likely to increase the number of times speed limits are lowered.
One of the main problems with them is that the information on how they work and what can affect the speed limit is not well publicised. In addition to them controlling limits at congested times they also lower limits to delay traffic reaching accidents or breakdowns that may be further along the carriageway or even on a link road. You might actually never see the obstruction that has led to the limit being lowered which is naturally frustrating to the driver.
In addition, they can also now lead to lower limits due to pollution monitoring apparatus that is positioned beside the carriageway where a motorway passes through urban areas. If you are ever passing Sheffield and going over the Tinsley Viaduct then you might notice the numerous poles next to the road, these are said pollution monitors and you may well encounter a 50 or 60 limit and think "wtf was that for, there was no incidents in the road".
As with most things governmental, they don't put the information out there anywhere near well enough.
