A look at Boro's loan signings since coming down in 2017

It’s an issue through out football and has been for years, large value transfers rarely work out for the acquiring club. Look at the top twenty transfers of all time and see how many failed. Neymar and Mbappe to PSG the top two arguably haven’t delivered what they were bought to do - Champions League. Same with Ronaldo to Juve, he made the team worse.

Hazard, Pogba, Dembele, Griezeman, Felix, Coutinho, Maguire (😀), Sancho. Clubs need to buy big to appease fans and sponsors, most of the time it doesn’t work out. Big clubs want to buy the finished article, then fans of other clubs demand their clubs do the same, and on and on it goes.

I‘d much prefer we take time to build a squad and an identity, where young players know they’ll be given a chance and then selling to reinvest (hopefully making the club more self-sufficient, god only knows what will happen when Sir Steve is no longer here) however look at how much panicking and complaining goes on just on here - when you have people complaining about our performances in the cup versus Tottenham and Chelsea, and Wilder stating there’ll be no young players in his squad for the season then unfortunately it wont happen; although in our case the cash is splashed on loan players effectively it’s dead money , but maybe better to write off £10m a year this way than saddle the club with the likes of Gestede, Assombalonga, Mido, Etc etc
This is something that's been on my mind for weeks. I haven't fully rationalised these thoughts yet but was thinking the other day, reading the thread about walk up prices being announced, about how a lot of us are asked to pay an extra quid for a ticket this season. "It's only a quid," etc. A quid! But think about the money that has been absolutely squandered on absolute rubbish or players who just don't do anything over the past six years. Aden Flint. Guedioura. Gestede. Braithwaite. Assombalonga. Saville. Payero. About £60m there. How on earth can it be so difficult to not actually do that and not shat £60m plus wages down the drain?

These extra quids, they're paying for this sort of nonsense. The chairman's paying more quids than anyone else, I understand that. But this is what sort of irks me about loan deals. Another batch of five, six, seven lads come up for a year. We either don't go up and have to replace them, cue the extra quid or two on our tickets next year so we can compete with those chasing promotion, or we do go up and have to mortgage the farm to sign them permanently or replace them completely. And we'll probably see another quid or two because we'd be paying for Premier League football. It doesn't seem sustainable.

Just feels like a bit of a racket TBH. Probably just getting old.

There's obviously lots of talk around loan signings at the moment and a lot seem to think they're the way forward for Boro. I've just made a list of loan players to join Boro since we were relegated in 2017 and you'd have to say that maybe the loan market isn't all it's cracked up to be. We've had 20 different players on loan in five seasons. 22 in total if you count Mo Besic and Patrick Roberts, who both had two spells with us. That number will go up to at least 22 different players this week when Steffen and Giles play against West Brom.

Danny Batth, Connor Roberts, Lewis Baker, Jack Harrison, Mo Besic, Rajiv Van La Parra, Jordan Hugill, Sam McQueen, Patrick Roberts, Ravel Morrison, Harold Moukoudi, Lukas Nmecha, Neeskens Kebano, Yannick Bolasie, Marcus Bettinelli, Andraz Sporar, Flo Balogun, Aaron Connolly, James Lea Siliki, Oriel Hernandez.

That's quite the list. How many have been an actual success? I would say absolutely none of them.

Just as well we didn’t buy them before we tried them.

Shameful list some unlucky Sam McQueen some not utilised properly jack Harrison, some gone on to success other places nmecha. But most should never have been recruited especially Aaron Connolly
Agree and I think you’re being generous with some of those markings. I wouldn’t give anyone over 5, maybe Besic and possibly Hernandez but he hardly played and was cut short.

These are Premier League players, you expect them to come in and be your best player. None of them were anywhere near that.

I’m an advocate for loaning in talent that we in theory couldn’t afford to buy, but that’s a damning list indeed.

We've had some really good loan signings at the Boro, more really poor ones mind, the vast majority havent worked in our favour, but good ones, as well as the ones mentioned we've had, Uwe, Geremi, Riggott, Queudrue, Carbone, Mills, Zenden, Mendieta, Doriva

Its always a chance taking another clubs player onloan

Who was that bald full back we had under Karanka. Think he was on loan and a success. Thought we’d make him a permanent.

I think the loan market is really important. If you can get it right it’s a huge boost and there have been some real successes in the Championship in recent years for teams at the top. Sadly we have not taken good advantage of the market.

Besic was decent during his first loan, he's proabbly the best of the pretty poor bunch

Jack Harrison was the right player at the wrong time. We basically did the hard work for Leeds. What people forget is he joined us in the MLS off-season. He wasn't up to speed and took a lot of time to catch up with the rest of the squad. And he also had to dislodge Downing / Traore.
