Flying from Newcastle early morning in May and was just planning on driving up there at 3am, but my father in law had some issues coming back from Newcastle overnight and I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight into what roads are closed and how best to get to Newcastle airport from eaglescliffe at that time of the day?

The a1 overnight road closure overnight isnt a permanent closure. North bound is maybe a week here and there, but id say southbound is closed more often. (Truck driver who hits it most early mornings).
if it was closed northbound on your way up, it is fairly well signposted for diversion, bringing you off just before Washington services.

Coming south if you’re unlucky enough that the A19 and A1 south are closed, head through Tyne tunnel, then pick up the A194, follow it onto A194M then that will bring you onto the A1 south where washington services south is.

I've read that the Tyne tunnel will be shut on weekends starting on 3rd may till March next year, closes 8pm Fridays till 6am Mondays, and a price increase to top it off 🤨

Check nearer the time but the A1 is generally shut around team valley at night.
Next week the A19 is shut overnight.
Getting home from midweek games is always fun.
There's always a way through, just allow more time.
If you go up the A1 just go through Gateshead, over Tyne bridge. There won't be hardly any traffic in the early hours, even with the Tyne bridge reduced to one lane each way!

Yea thats going to cause big delays, northbound tunnel is closing, both directions will be using the southbound tunnel, obviously down to one lane. Initial closure is 3rd may, then starts on 7th June until next year

Just been checking all of this, and I'm finding both the national highways and traffic england websites to be very hard to use!

I just want to be able to put in my start/destination and when I'm going to find the best route, is it really that hard?!

Is there anyone I can call and they can tell me?

Go through Durham then across to consett and hit the A1 after the roadworks.

It's surprisingly difficult to get clear guidance on line for roadworks.
As above, Google maps is usually pretty good( live, as you travel).I find it more reliable than the AA site.

Every time I come home from gigs in Newcastle there is some diversion. It's a pain but following the signs works, just add 30 minutes to your journey time.

What's wrong with a trip around the backstreets of Peterlee, Hartlepool and Blackhall rocks....
I've done it too 🤣

Every time we come back I say to my son 'I wonder what places we are going to see this time'.

I have tried my own route/short cuts before, which taught me a lesson. Just follow the diversion signs.

You certainly don't want to breakdown in the depths of county Durham in the dark.
If the locals don't recognise you they'll be reaching for the flaming torches and pitchforks!
