Adama

They won the WC with 4 consecutive 1-0 wins.
We used to mock Arsenal for that.

I don't doubt the tactic requires a considerable technical skill, but it is largely negative football.
And yet they had twice as many shots on target and far more corners than England. Goals win tournaments but I wouldn't call Spain negative

Each to their own of course; as a proportion of the amount of time they had the ball, Sweden produced more shots and shots on target than Spain tonight.

I remember when Spain won Euro 2012, their third major tournament win on the bounce, lots of people were comparing them to the Brazil 1970 side and saying they were possibly the greatest international side of all-time.

9 years later and no one is saying that. It’s as if everyone’s decided their style is effective but boring, and that’s not enough to be classed as iconic.

How on Earth can you say Spain played largely negative football when their entire game revolves creating chances, scoring goals and winning matches? They play to win. Negative football is playing not to lose - like Sweden did. And they has zero chances on target.

As a proportion of the time they had on the ball? Well that’s a creative way of
looking at it. They had 15% possession so the solitary shot on target is I guess proportionately higher than Holland the other night as well. Sweden were turgid

Yep,
Sweden had a shot for every 2.42 minutes of possession that they had.
Spain had a shot for every 4.30 minutes of possession.

If Spain had spent more time attacking rather than maintaining possession, they'd have won.:)

Can't blame Sweden for Spain's endless keep ball

Traore would have provided something different for Spain tonight and if their manager wasn't good enough to realise this then hard cheddar, it's their loss.

Negative tactics still usually have a positive intent. Nobody deploys “negative” tactics with the goal of not achieving their best possible perceived result.

They had ten times as many accurate passes as Sweden tonight, many more shots, edged it on xG, but couldn’t stick it in the net.

It will be interesting to see how they do against a better counter attacking side this tournament. The amount of times they gave possession away uncontested when they had men committed was uncountable.

Spain showed tonight that they won’t win the tournament. They just don’t have the goals in them. I say this in the knowledge that they lost their first game against Switzerland in the World Cup in 2010 but went on to win the tournament.

Bit early to say imho. I still think this tournament is absolutely wide open. At least 6 teams who I could easily see winning it and a handful more who it isn’t beyond.

Well none of that side are playing 9 years later, that’s a big reason nobody is saying it now.

Spain between 2008-2012 were a great team with great players. The Spain team in the last 4-5 years are not a patch on that side.

the team from 9 years ago had a very effective style but could also put the ball in the net. This side and the one in 2018 can keep possession well but lacking real firepower.
