Adverts on Netflix, Amazon

Just started this week on Prime. It's a minute or two at the start of the program, not overly intrusive so I'm happy with it
Haven't watched Netflix yet but think they're doing the same?
NOW TV has reduced their price for an adverts inclusive sub, a large hike to get rid of them. The UK national channels all have adverts and a cost to get rid

So, will you pay the (pretty average £3.99) to get rid of the adverts? It adds up when it's a few channels

For me, Prime's fine with adverts, it's free really because I pay for the Amazon deliveries mostly. And don't watch much on it
Netflix will be a decision. It hasn't had much good on it for ages, has gone up, so will probably get rid
Now TV has stuff I haven't seen, and I like the price reduction, so will probably get that instead of Netflix and watch the HBO/Sky stuff for a while

The problem with all these services is that they have to increase profits every year for shareholders to get value. For a while that was done through growth of the customer base but once that has been exhausted they can only increase prices, crack down on password sharing or introduce adverts. We’re at that point now. I’ll certainly be getting rid of one or more of the services I subscribe to.

Wouldn't bother me, along with the (correct) move back to weekly releases for new episodes, though it is funny how so much is returning to standard TV practices.

I used to pirate everything. The best thing about it, other than the price, is that it was the best service available. I had a single app with everything I wanted to watch, without adverts. Netflix came along and actually made it good value to go legit. Prime I have anyway for deliveries. Now that I need Disney, Netflix, Prime, Apple, Sky, Paramount etc to get everything and they are all on different apps, they are all putting prices up and adding adverts that piracy offers the best service. Even if the price was the same for piracy, the service is better. I can go back to one app again.

The only reason I have the apps now is because of the kids but I'll just teach them how to use a different service and save us a fortune.

The music industry got it right. I don't know anyone that pirates music anymore. The streaming apps offer the best service.

They're returning to that because it keeps your sub running. Get a free month, binge loads and don't subscribe. Or do weekly releases and keep your monthly payment going

As SP says, it's about profits, but it's also about keeping production going. I think the binge thing maybe on on the slide

Definitely pure Greed. No need for it when already paying a hefty subscription.

I was stunned when it popped up on prime on Monday. Although clearly out of the loop not knowing it was happing. Do amazon really need more money?

That and they recently changed prime delivery to be over £20 if you want it free.

Just winds me up. I do pay for YouTube premium to get around the adverts. Although some still sneak through.

I get why they're doing it, but I genuinely think that releasing a full season in one go was damaging interest and discussion over programmes as people watched it in a weekend and then never thought about it again until the next season 2 years later.

Yep, I agree. There's a load of fog around stuff me and the Mrs have binged since lockdown. We often had to watch the last Ep of the previous season to get up to date if there isn't a recap.

I'm happy we're getting back to the one or two Ep per week model

This is pretty much me. Even while subscribing to a load of streaming services and a Cineworld card I often resort to Stremio and a Real Debrid subscription to have everything in one place and a huge library to browse through for convenience.

I used to pay for a cineworld card, netflix, apple TV, paramount and prime, although like you I have that for deliveries anyways. Combined it was a pretty sum, although I've not bothered with sky or virgin in a long time

I have a low power server that sits in my office. I tell it what shows I want to watch, what movies I want to watch, and specify a quality. I can subscribe to lists (e.g any horror film above 7.5 on IMDB) that will auto download films above a certain criteria, or I can log in via an app to browse each streaming service and see what is trending, or I can do it all manually. Everything downloads in the top available quality with audio codecs, I watch it directly on my TV, but I can also watch it on any device around the home or even away from home. Its as easy or complicated as you want to make it. you can even make kids accounts and control which genres they're able to watch, and with a request portal, anything can be requested and added. With a 2GB up/down connection, stuff downloads pretty much instantly if I don't already have it, and it monitors for new episodes, new releases, quality upgrades etc. You can even download for offline viewing when travelling.

There will never be a one-service-fits-all model like that for watching TV/movies I am guessing, other than IPTV sticks, but they're very spotty and massively compressed. So certainly no legit ones. I want it at the same quality as a physical release where possible, and with atmos soundtrack intact. and not looking like a jpeg that's been saved 18 times.

Isn’t Netflix the other way around? They’ll give you a cheaper monthly price if you have adverts? Sure I read that.

Pirating is massively on the rise again due to a range of decisions on pricing, password sharing etc.

It's incredibly easy for even the least tech minded to get access to decent quality streams too. The big companies will milk it until they can no longer, just like the music industry.

I was reading that those that pirate content actually pay the most for content they want too which to me, showed this is as much about getting a good service than just saving a few quid

That's his they sell it but they have increased prices so really you are paying more to not have adverts rather than less to have adverts.

I have looked at getting back into doing that but I don't want to spend all the money up front on new equipment. Stremio as @SilentProf mentioned is very good. I already have a Real Debrid subscription. If I can figure out how to give me recommendations for the kids then I'll move to that when all my subs need renewing I think.

Ah ok, so next day delivery is still free, it only costs if you want the 'by 1pm' service or same day. The post was a bit misleading then.

Mad when you list it like that. Would love to see some of the costs when people add sky or virgin TV into that. I bet there's a few paying over £200 per month!!!!
