Akpom to WHU £18m?

Three of our 5 best players are indeed gone (Archer, Ramsey, Giles).
Akpom is likely to go (too late to replace) and otherwise is supposedly injured.
Howson is injured.

Smith and Dijksteel are both injured.
We have no left back. The prodigal son is injured too.

Of course it is true that we may strengthen before the end of the window, but tick tock Mr Scott.
At the moment the team is significantly weaker than the one we finished with and we may have to accept that we won't be as strong this year, even with two or three signings.

Those two or three signings will be the difference though. Replace Giles and Archer with similar and we'll have a better squad than last season, in my opinion. It all hinges on whether Akpom stays or goes, which at the minute I think it looks like he'll go.

Our four best players are gone?
Firstly they were not our players and were always leaving in the summer, also Archer came in January, and Ramsey signed at the end of January.
Yes we are weaker now than we were in February, but I think Carrick and his recruitment team will sort it out before September, plus if we are there or thereabouts this January, we may find another couple of gems available for loans.
It’s a week before the season and we’re talking about Matt crooks or forss being the sole striker. Don’t buy for one minute Chuba is injured, think dieng is solid enough but he’s a level below steffan so steffan, giles archer ramsey 4 of our 5 best players are Gone and the 5th one js injured and likely pushing for a move.

won’t find a player half as good as archer if we got him back on loan it would be an absolute steal as he’s far too good for this level.

Whereas I would be over the moon to have Archer and Ramsey back I’m sure it isn’t just Aston Villa who have good youngsters available. You can bet your life that the club and MC are sounding out the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle etc. It’s quite feasible we could get someone who supplies as many assists as Giles and chips in with a few themselves.

I agree that we'll see a couple of strong additions, but also that Akpom will move on.

It was always going to be a tough ask to replace the loanees with equal quality and factor in the loss of Akpom and its u likely we'll be a strong as we were towards the end of last season.

OK, I'll rephrase, the team that we have when the window shuts will be weaker than last season.

But you can only really compare the window shutting this season vs. the window shutting last season. We didn't sign Archer or Ramsey until January.

We've lost Steffen, Roberts, Bola, Giles, Muniz, Mowatt.

Steffen and Roberts have been replaced - We didn't rate Steffen at the start of last season, he improved as the season went on.

We've replaced Muniz with Rogers - Rogers has signed a permanent deal, Muniz was on loan, so we've freed up a loan position.
We've replaced Bola (a covering LB) with Coulson (who will be a covering LB). Possibly a step down but the jury is still out in my opinion.

We also have better players in Silvera, Gilbert, Van Den Berg - Last season we had players like Boyd-Munce on the bench.

Hackney has also massively improved since the start of last season.

We're three signings short. LB to replace Giles, CDM cover to replace Mowatt, and a striker, and we have 5 available loan positions to fill.

From what I’ve seen so far Silvera looks a good replacement for Ramsey. Remains to be seen whether that continues when the proper football gets started but I’m hopeful.

Agree a left back, centre mid and striker are imperative signings.

I agree - an improved McGree (he got better throughout last season) and the addition of Silvera (and Gilbert/Rogers who can also both play there) is our LW totally sorted.

Ramsey was amazing when he was playing, but fans are forgetting he only actually played 7 full games for us + a few late sub appearances.

----

4 weeks to make 3 signings is more than enough time. There's no panic.

There is a bit of panic. We are going into the start of the season without any full backs or any strikers. Our talisman and captain have also had no pre-season.

But fans are forgetting the same happens every season, to every team. The famous Carrick quote - "That's football".

First game last season we were playing Marc Bola at CB because Fry was injured and Wilder was obsessed with left-footers.

We were playing Akpom up front with Watmore - before this season the fans (including myself) all wanted him sold; he was rubbish.

We'd just lost Tav and everyone was unsure about McGree being good enough to take his place...

Our bench was full of kids - Caolan Boyd-Munce, Hayden Hackney (before this season his only experience was at Scunthorpe).

I sadly think the club thinks our LW is sorted.
McGree is unproductive there. Pretty looking player, but not a dangerous one.
Silvera is a wild punt. He's not landed anywhere yet and nothing has emerged from the A league for years and years. It is a very poor league.
Rogers might emerge out there, but is still as green as grass.

Ramsey was absolute class, obvious to anyone.
If he is available we should bring him back in a heartbeat. He would also be prime to replace Akpom if Chuba does sadly move on.

So all these ‘but look at last season’ and x,y and z’s from last seasons start, we have had a whole year to plan for this one to be much better than last, the point is to want to prepare and plan for significant improvement, not replicate it in many ways. No offence but you do somewhat appease the clubs lack of quality provision to date, to sell our best left back Bola (not saying much, but true) then bring in Coulson who is a poor substitute for Bola, never mind Giles. I understand the new approach and the not overpaying for players, but we have a squad that needs serious quality to mount a promotion challenge, some really good transfers have taken place with other teams, I hope if we are awaiting prem loans it is a case of deal all but agreed and we aren’t gazumped late on by other teams.

Our LW is sorted. The start of last season we had McGree and Giles (who wasn't as successful at LW).

McGree massively improved throughout the season, and we now have Silvera/Gilbert/Rogers who can all play there.

Ramsey was only signed in January when we were already in 4th... McGree was successful in that position before Ramsey arrived.

I agree Ramsey is class - but he only started 7 games for us.

My point is that every single team in the league is in the same position as we are. It happens every season and fans seem to just forget.

We still have the potential to bring in 5 loan players. I think we can all pretty much guarantee we'll bring in at least 2 before the loan window closes.

I agree with all if that, I think the squad depth overall will be better, but the strongest 11 will almost certainly be weaker.
Replacing Giles, Archer, Ramsey and most likely Akpom with players of equal talent and effectiveness is going to be a huge task and almost certainly I see us weaker across those positions.
I still think we'll be around the play offs, but any more than that is difficult to see at the moment, unless Akpom signs a new contract and we pull a few rabbits out of the hat.

I agree the strongest 11 is weaker as things stand. I just don't think it'll be weaker when the window closes.
