You have to give it to the guy, what a competitor. All the surgery stuff, that after most of us would have ended up struggling to walk, never mind run - loads of dosh in the bank etc and he still trains like a crazy person and competes with real athletes.Win or lose, well done that man 🙌

He seems to love the drama of Centre Court. He will never reach the heights of 8 years ago but he is still an entertainer.

Never been his biggest fan but you have got to hand it to him… he dug deep to pull it back and win

Wee Jimmy Krankie wont be happy unless he defeats Dan Evans though. The jury is out ooop McNorth

I wish he'd drop his open hatred for the English. Tonight he said he wanted to win to get revenge for England beating Germany. revenge ??

If any English person said half the stuff against the Scottish that he does against the English they would probably get arrested in today's climate

He doesn’t hate the English at all. His wife, children and coach are all English and he lives here. The comment that he would support “whoever England are playing against” was made as a joke in an interview where Tim Henman was teasing him about Scotland not being in the World Cup that year. He must have been a teenager at the time.

I’m not sure about him saying anything about revenge tonight either. If he meant beating a German was revenge for them not knocking England out, I’d be willing to bet that was just a poor attempt at a joke too.

Didn't he wear a T shirt knocking the English for the 2018 world cup ?

He has a very dry sense of humour. Which is obviously lost on a lot of people.

I can’t find any evidence whatsoever that he said that. Could you provide a source?
If he has he’s clearly joking, as he was with the “anyone but England” comments.

Fantastic performance last night.
A real throwback to his halcyon days.

And as for hating the English, doing it from the splendour of leafy Surrey would be a bit odd wouldn't it?

Almost as ridiculous as Sean Connery wanting Scottish independence from the splendor of the Bahamas. And despite not living there for decades

Nope. More bs. Its amazing the crap ignorant people come out with to try and discredit him becauseofa joke he made FIFTEEN years ago. Makes you proud to be English.
Radio 5 live commentator said it

Oh that's convenient. Complete and total hearsay. Yet absolutely nothing about it anywhere, on any forum, message board, newspaper article or website. If Andy Murray said he wanted "revenge " for England beating Germany it would be reported everywhere.

I'm never quite sure whether to laugh at or cry for people that can't get over a joke line from Murray half a lifetime ago. I guess I should feel pity really as it must be very difficult to go through life carrying an enormous bag of chips on your shoulder because someone you don't know from Adam said something innocuous and harmless sometime deep in the past. It was a joke, it certainly wasn't personal and I can't believe anyone actually takes offense from it. Then again, in a world where plenty boo the likes of Raheem Sterling for having the audacity to engage in a few seconds of peaceful protest against racism, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

As for Andy Murray, he is undeniably one of GB's greatest ever sportsmen and surely the world would be a better place if we all lived our lives with his determination to be the best person we can be. I have nothing but admiration for the bloke and despite the odds being heavily stacked against him, it would be brilliant to see him achieve one more big title before he hangs up his racket.

I think someone's looked at a page of sports headlines and got them mixed up.

Southgate talked about getting revenge against the Germans for his penalty miss - Murray was playing a German but never said anything about getting revenge, that I can find.

Also how would beating another German be revenge for England beating the Germans anyway? lt doesn't even make sense.

I'm also not aware of him saying any "stuff" against the English other than that one solitary time which, as @SilentProf says, was just a light-hearted riposte to Tim Henman, who was making fun of Scotland for not having qualified for the World Cup, and asking Murray who he would be supporting.

No, that's just another internet myth, I'm afraid.

To be honest I also don't see the problem with a Scotland fan engaging in a bit of banter about wanting England to lose. He's, erm Scottish isn't he? Most Boro fans want to see Newcastle lose, that's football. People shouldn't take it so seriously.

In any case he represents Britain at tennis, not England.

He identifies as British, lives in England, has an English wife and English children. Slightly odd for someone who supposedly hates the English.

No doubt plenty of those still whining about it will also bemoan the "snowflake culture" we now live in oblivious to the irony they can't take a joke about football.
