Sky is better for this as Neville and Carragher actually know what they’re talking about, but there’s always been faaar too much focus on referee’s decisions in punditland.

5-10 years ago you’d watch MOTD and it was 80% banging on about refs decisions and whether they were right or wrong.

Seriously, it’s one decision over a 90 minute game. Tell us why the teams were good or bad. Analyse the other 89 minutes of football. Teams don’t lose because of one controversial decision, they lose because they were **** for the other 89 minutes. And whinging about it afterwards doesn’t change anything, just get on with the game.

Embarrassing level of punditry if all you can talk about is refs.

There are some fans on this site who slam a ref before a ball has been kicked

‘Not this ref again’ etc

Some fans think every game the ref has a bias against us, and it’s tedious
 
We had NW one of the worst managers for abusing match officials at our club not so long ago, I don't recall many people calling him out, in fact most supported him and his carry on and still do, you can’t pick and choose when officials should be treated with respect.
 
I dont think a single yellow card was unwarranted - they just didnt like the fact he was pulling them up on their pathetic antics that they can normally get away with.

Plenty called him out on it. Let’s not make things up to play the hypocrisy card.
 
Mourinho effectively causing the chaos. Roma didn’t lose because of the referee. It was actually an awful game for the whole officiating team to manage and they did well in the circumstances.

It's a fair point though: to what extent does our desire to win cause us to overlook behaviour that crosses the line? Warnock is one who stands out as someone who is is willing to deploy that form of psychological pressure on officials that Mourihno excels at. Fortunately, the low point that is having Warnock as your manager has been and gone for us.

Maybe managers should receive training. After all, they themselves receive the most fearsome abuse. The point about refs is they don't receive the mega-salaries that cushion the blow. Even the sainted Carrick offers a case in point. For the most part, he is admirably calm and measured, but after the Luton game he went on about their penalty winner far too much. As a more-than-prepared-to-be-biased Boro fan, I thought it was a pen. It certainly wasn't a stone-cold mistake. Imagine it had been in a game that really mattered - like the play-off final - and the ref had got on a tube, say. with a load of pi**ed-up Boro fans. Doesn't bear thinking about...

I really wish they would strike. Strikes only work if you are in a position to cause chaos. They could have every football match in the country stopped. From Sunday league to the premier League. It would be magnificent.

At grass roots level refs have been pulled out of entire leagues as a protest at behaviour. Entire leagues have been cancelled at weekends in Bristol - https://www.itv.com/news/westcountr...disrespect-sees-u16-football-league-suspended After a child ref was assaulted.

There should be a nation wide action.

As part of coaching badges Mangers should know the laws of the game with regular CPD updates each season. Include panelists Murphy, Jenas, Shearer frequently misunderstand the laws of the game, and their misunderstanding permeates across the game.

There’s a big difference though between ‘slamming’ a ref on a message board before a ball’s kicked and physically attacking him in an airport.

Do not get me wrong, I am all for respect of referees and have witnessed the abuse they receive first hand when my son was refereeing. On two separate occasions other people had to prevent an adult assaulting him - he was 15 at the time.

I disagree with plenty, I said not many and stand by that view and don't recall any specific threads started on here in relation to it.

Agreed, but people read a message board and it could in future spread the narrative, and on a big occasion could spill over in future

I don’t see that with us, but we all have our part to play around the respect piece.

We should discuss controversial decisions, but we should move away from the narrative that it’s because we are the boro that those decisions happen
 
This is why people in the football media need to stop laughing and joking and talking up Mourinho's antics as fun sh*thousing and like he's some big box office character, cause this is the type of **** he causes with it. Similar happened with Anders Frisk.

Great point though, and sometimes you will get a howler that can derail your entire season and make you lose a cup.

I hated Warnock and Mourinho for that, but understand it’s a tactic. There was a match report in the Guardian that said the Roma bench deliberately stopped jumping up to contest every decision from extra time onwards, mainly because they were all on yellows. It’s a switch they can turn on and off. And it comes from the manager, they want to create that “the worlds against us” mentality.

Embarrassing to be honest. Just coach your team to be better at football, like Michael Carrick has done.
 
I know emotions can get the better of everyone during a match but it really does need FIFA/UEFA/FA to do something about it. There has always been a bit of "feedback" on the pitch going back to the 70s when I started watching but it really is out of hand now and a lot more co-ordinated by the players and managers.

You know certain managers are telling players to make sure they are all over the ref for every decision that goes against them even if it is clearly correct.
 
Jose deserves a lengthy punishment for this.

Yes he's not in control of those thugs who call themselves Roma fans, but he certainly hasn't helped the situation and in fact has flared the situation.

He really is a horrible person and football would be best if he wasn't involved.

These same Roma fans were a disgrace when we faced them 17 years ago. Looks like nothing has changed, and I doubt it ever will.

I’d disagree that most supported his actions towards refs but, either way, only NW can take accountability for his own actions.

It’s wrong to act like NW, Mourinho, Klopp etc do that’s for sure.

But for those who believe we shouldn’t call out that shocking behaviour at the airport, because fans of the club discuss or abuse refs on here, are wrong.

There is a world of difference between discussing refs and their decisions on here (part of the fun of following football) and attacking a man at an airport with his wife and teenage daughter.

I do agree that refs need more protection and this is another issue that the games authorities and leaders could stamp out but refuse to tackle (like gamesmanship, time wasting, diving etc).
