Any guitar players on here ?

Funny how things turn out sometimes isn’t it ? Earlier this year my other half decided to try and make some box guitars after being made redundant at Christmas. I said I’d help and paint one for him. As some of you know I have a big connection to Roseberry Topping and came across a piece of music with the same name on YouTube, played by Gordon Giltrap. With nothing to lose I contacted him on fb and to my surprise he not only responded but he asked us to make one for him! I wasn’t expecting that. Thing I’d like to ask on here is - what do you think about 6 string box guitars? Have you played one ? Do you find them comfortable to hold ? What do you think to the sound you get from them? Is there an interest in them because I can’t see the point in carrying on with this if there isn’t. I know guitarists in gigging bands won’t play them - maybe look for blues players? Any other suggestions or advice please ?

I've never tried playing a box guitar Jan. When I think of them I just think Bo Diddley :) Not sure what demand there'd be for them but would think more local people would be interested in ones with your custom paintwork as collectables rather than to play.

PS. I've got a homemade Strat that needs painting :)

He’s done a Union Jack on a precision bass for his brother Central , depends what you were thinking about Central

Theres a big revival over in america, so it will catch on over here soon enough.

if theyre good enough for PJ Harvey, Billy Gibbons, Paul McCartney, Bo Diddley, Seasick Steve & Tom Waites - then theyre good enough for any 'musician'.

jug bands, blues bands and skiffle groups would be the target groups - and anyone who wants a different sound - please keep at it

get in touch with a bloke in america called Shane Speal - he has a museum of original and new cigar box guitars (and fiddles) and plays regularly (see link below) - could drum up some good publicity. Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band.

Thanks Johnny. That was very useful. We’ve made a couple of 3 strings but they’re not so easy to play as a 6 string. We’re calling them art on a wall. You hang them on the wall and then take them down and play them. I’ve painted a Transporter one

I think they’re quite trendy here too now. Never played one a six string sounds easier to get a grip of.
We‘ve tried using the cigar boxes they don’t leaven lot of space for images so we are using a plain box. If you fancy trying one then happy to let you try one. We’re only in Eaglescliffe

If I even suggest buying yet another guitar I’ll get skinned and rolled in salt 😂😂 just out of interest roughly how much are they?

I'm not trying to sell you one, just want to see what you think of playing something that's a different shape. It's hard pricing them up because they're a musical instrument and a piece of art. Prices range from £150 to £300 at present. This is a Roseberry Topping one that's been reserved

Yeah this is spot on. It's a big thing in the U.S.
