We're off on holiday there next week and government advice says we can only use dong, but the Explore website says only take US dollars. Which is it to be? Confused

Travel advice tips also welcome :)

Pay for things in dollars and you usually get the change in Viet Dong. Dollars are more valuable in Vietnam

We just used Dong when we went but that was about 10 years ago. My son actually returned from Vietnam last week so I'll ask him when he surfaces (we are 6 hours behind UK time here so don't hold your breath!!)

Going in January but planning to just use my zero commission credit card as much as possible with a few us dollars as backup.
I assume that a card will be widely accepted unless anyone knows different.

I spent a lot of time in Vietnam during my single years and always found my Dong to be in high demand, especially in places like Smiley’s pool hall and Apocalypse Now nightclub.

Get to the War Museum in Ho Chi Min - Starts of jolly downstairs and gets more harrowing as you climb the floors .....

Use a monzo or revolut or similar card to withdraw Dong at a decent rate from the many ATMs out there. You used to only be able to withdraw VND2million at a time. (about £60) but it went a long way.

Ha Long Bay overnight cruise (pick a reputable cruise company / boat - some do sink!) and Hoi An peaceful as relatively traffic free old town and great beaches would be on my must do list.

Don't have suit made up in 24 hours, It wont fit very well if they are rushing.

Don't play pool with scantily clad girls if your wife is with you.

If in Ho CHi Minh, go and have a £5 beer on one the roof top bars in the evening. Also go and have the same beer for 50pence in Bui Vien street sat on a plastic chair.

If you find yourself down Bui Vien, pop into the Bookwarm Cafe and say hello to my old friend Kieran, the grumpiest bar owner I have ever known 😂
