Anyone know the rules

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but whilst we are talking about rules, could anyone confirm what the offence would be if, during a corner kick being taken, 2 players were to pick a third player up in the box akin to a Rugby Union lineout to give a massive height advantage and the ability to effectively hang in the air for as long as they want waiting to head the ball into the goal?

As I can't recall seeing it, I'm assuming it could be classed as dangerous play but I'd say that would be a dubious. Be an interesting one if you could get away with it... Turbo-charged corners!

Bit of an odd one really. It is not a specific offense but it is almost an unwritten tradition for it to be classed as 'unsporting behaviour'.
So technically a referee could allow it, as 'unsporting behaviour' is pretty subjective. I doubt he would referee many more games though.

The US Soccer Federation actually publishes recommendations as to what referees should consider as unsporting behaviour. It does include lifting a player.

Could be totally wrong here but when the keeper has the ball in both hands, is it not almost classed as out of play? I mean, I don't think another player can touch the ball can he? If an opposition player punched the ball out of the keepers hands I believe it would be a free kick for a foul rather than handball wouldn't it?

It's a good question though and a strange one!

Great reply Rofesleg, thanks for that!

There used to be a segment on the Sports Bar show on Talksport where people would ask Dermot Gallagher these sort of mad questions. Some brilliant questions but I don't think they do it anymore sadly.

I can guarantee that Sam Allardyce will have investigated this and would have put it into practice if it was allowed.

This would be classed as unsporting behaviour, which is a cautionable offence. After stopping play to caution the offender the referee would restart with an indirect free kick to the opponents.

In the laws up till 1997, a scenario which is almost identical in terms of how it would be looked at by a referee in terms of the spirit of the law, was included in the laws document. See IFAB Decision 2 to Law 12 below, from a copy of the 1996/97 Laws of the Game (unsporting behaviour was referred to as "ungentlemanly conduct" back then).

I reckon in that scenario that touching the ball is rather deliberate though?
Not really - as described, it sounds as if it was totally accidental. He was trying to high 5 the keeper but in doing so, his hand ended up touching the ball inadvertently.

As a retired referee, I can tell you that if I ever saw that in one of my games, I would not have been penalising it.

Giving that as a penalty (which is what it would have to be) would be one of the most egregious examples of what is known as "Gotcha" refereeing (penalising highly technical, trifling or dubious offences just because you can, and without any feeling for or understanding of, the spirit of the game).

Sorry, I was replying to the comment about a player picking the ball up when they mistakenly think it has gone out of play, saying that would be handball as it's deliberately.

I definitely don't think touching the ball accidentally whilst the keeper is holding it should be given as handball.
