Anyone think houchen will get back in?

We genuinely have been a bit of a laughing stock today with some of my London pals. Anyway they might be about to vote in Susan Hall 🤯

Please, someone make it make sense!
Indeed, they definitely won't be laughing any more if that nutjob gets in.

Sorry to hear you have been a laughing stock with your London pals,
It’s quite possible the people that could be bothered to get out and vote don’t have “London pals” and evidently don’t give a Phuck about your “London Pals”
Sorry for your loss in this sad time.
The country is about to vote in a Labour government on a landslide. Plucky little Tees valley votes in a Tory Mayor again. Small towns, small minds. Ben will keep on fighting the good fight, I'm sure.

A steady Eddie plodder was never going to be enough to turn the dial or snap people out of their apathy. Disappointing from Labour.

Calling voters “thick” etc also isn’t helpful and divisive comments like that are just playing into Houchen et al’s hands.

What's the saying? fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Shame on Teesside.

I've just seen the BBC coverage from Norton and the number of people saying that Houchen has done wonders for the area with the airport and the freeport just goes to show how little people engage with politics. I'm certain that most have no idea about the reality of the vaporware jobs or the alleged corruption.
Pretty sure the lack of scrutiny from the Gazette is also a large factor.

The vast majority don't go digging.

It seems some people are happy to have Houchen as the catalyst that enables huge sums of public money, to be transferred into the hands of a few private individuals coffers.

Pretty sure most don't know much about it at all in any real detail

They don't see it that way. They perceive that he's bringing money to an area that's been ****ed for years. That's why Tories don't get called out on it enough. Because people don't mind the public getting fcuked over if they think they'll benefit.

I don't agree with it, but nobody can be too surprised surely?

I said it the other day. You have to play their game if you want to win. Crying that the game is unfair just leaves you stood there with a flaccid c0ck looking stupid.

I'm sure the labour candidate is a nice fella but it was a terribly uninspiring choice. I think there needed to be much more positivity about the Teessworks site and the possibilities that would be available in the right hands. To be fair, that was the thread that Gibbo had been pressing for the past week or so.

The end result will be that the area will lose out again though, that's for sure. There's no doubt that the area deserves better. Today was a missed opportunity all round.

Disappointing to hear some of the sneering condescending remarks about the area from other people who, like myself, have moved away. Not surprised some of the usernames involved though.

This is largely on Labour. I live in Redcar and work form home and I haven't seen any canvasser's out for this. Other than this board, I've seen very little about the election at all - for something so important to the area Labour haven't done anything to inspire the population.

I'm not sure how much the Turley factor played into this but I'd imagine it wasn't zero. I won't vote for Turley in the GE but I voted Labour last night in both Mayoral and PCC as the only viable alternative.

Labour might get more of a shock at the GE than anyone is expecting if this result is anything to go by.

The best thing Labour can do is offer unconditional backing until/unless any wrongdoing is uncovered.

Go after him but don't give him any excuses for not delivering on his promises.

Be very vocal publically about backing him to the hilt. Do nothing to deliberately hinder him other than apply the law of the land. It's the only way the lies around e.g. a new hospital will be put to bed.

It'll be a major blow to the area when Labour don't sort the hospitals out themselves, but Ben has it covered so why should/would they.

Time to not get old, not get ill etc.
Given you won't be voting for them your opinion is, largely meaningless. Until the next election cycle comes around, of course.

Nevertheless the comments about the Labour alternative campsign at the election certainly wasn't good enough. The campaign should have had high energy and taken the fight to Houchen. As said above the people of Teesside need a positivity and a vision.

Irs all to similar to Biden and Trump all this.

If Steve Gibson hadn’t thrown his support behind McEwan it probably wouldn’t have even had the 17% swing.

So much for the Teesside Resistance.

Lots of interesting discussions on here, some I totally agree with, some I totally disagree with, and mostly slightly agree or disagree.

We need to get better with social media- much better!
As 5 labour groups we need to work together better.
We need much more money to even slightly compete with the Tories in leaflets, social media spends and advertising our offer.
We need a candidate at the start of their public service career not at the end.
We need a vision and stick with it, and stop living in the past.

Sadly the average person on Teesside, or the country for that matter, does not pay attention to politics. They’ll only take note every four years when an election comes round and even then won’t go digging for the details.

Houchen is a good self publicist who’ll turn up to any photo opportunity he can. Most people will only be seeing that side to him and just conclude he’s doing everything he can to bring jobs to the area without having the full picture. Compare that to Labour who I saw nothing from on social media, and never had anyone from them knock on my door (Houchens team did, which I ignored).

Don’t get me wrong it a sad indictment of the average person in this country (it’s not just a teesside thing, I think he’d do well anywhere in the vacuum of a strong opposition candidate).
