Article 16

What does it mean. It allows the EU to unilaterally put border controls in place I think?

Reading reports I don’t understand this bit:

“The Irish government was not consulted on the EU's initial decision to invoke the article”

how could they do this without informing the Irish gvt - surely they need help from the Irish gvt to invoke the controls?

Does anybody understand how it works?

Yes it’s EU imposing this in Ireland as an Eu member so Ireland has no real say in the matter regardless.

it was added as a last resort clause to prob bridge negotiations but what do you know first chance they get and bang they activate it.

this is why you should always be wary of any clause that might only be a stop gap or last resort as once they are there then they can and will be used.

On 13th Jan when asked in parliament about empty shelves in Northern Ireland Boris Johnson said he would have no hesitation in invoking Article16. Just for a bit of perspectiv.

Yes he did but it's only when EU threaten to use it that counts

They didn’t threaten to use it. They invoked it and realised the shat storm they had made then made a u turn faster than the tories could be proud of

Just the prerequisite for the main course to come
NI suffering badly from Brexit (ha) and the sweet Arlene has demanded Johnson does something to improve matters given the dire trading conditions businesses are experiencing (o dear)
Calais issues building with meat fish etc etc being wasted and thrown away
Our industry shrinking as trade made impossible for perishable goods
The full rules and layers of bureaucracy don’t kick even kick in til end of March
Give til June and this government is going to be in dire straits over trade with the eu
Pressure will build (it already is) and it if wasn’t for an even worse performance with the pandemic Brexit would be reported more in the mainstream
Just read a damning report from Bloomberg on how bad it’s going and loads of companies stock piled before 1st jan but are running out of product but replacing it is so difficult with all the form filling

Oooooohhhhh. Project reality lads
Come on. Let this government fall on its effing sword and collapse
It deserves nothing less after the lies told to the British people
