Knowing a few members have been to Australia for The Ashes I’m looking for some info. All being well hoping to going to the Melbourne and Sydney tests which suit my holiday periods.

Which UK airport should I be looking to travel from and which airline.
What areas of Melbourne and Sydney should I look to stay.
Fancy taking the train from Melbourne to Sydney but it’s 11 hours so should I be looking to fly between them.
Are tickets easy to get.
Should I just going for a tour packet but I don’t fancy paying more so someone else have a jolly (Barmy Army)

I know it’s a long way off but just looking see what I could have to pay.
Thanks in advance

My personal (genuine) advice would be to go to Australia when the ashes aren’t on, itll be cheaper and you can enjoy it to the full without having your days ruined by yet another heavy England defeat.

I mean, ok, Stokes has made a great start as captain but we are just so bad down under generally it has completely put me off going to an away Ashes tour.

I realise this post isn’t in any way what you asked for 😁 sorry.

Choose the airline that suits your timings but my airlines of choice to Australia are

Singapore Airlines
Qantas

Both because Chiangi Singapore is the best stopover/changeover airport. 14 hours then 8 hours to Melbourne respectively. British Airways also fly that way but of course Qantas are their one World Alliance Partner.

An honourable mention to Qatar Airways if you find cost wise you have to go via the Middle East.

I will be there in 2025 too hopefully.

We flew Malaysia Air, which was good value and quality.
Melbourne is a great city. The tram system is excellent. We stayed on Albert Park and took tram either into town or down to St Kilda beach.

we drove to Sydney and had 3 nights in the Blue Mountains on the way, but internal flights (Jetstar) were pretty cheap.

For Sydney, I’d definitely recommend staying in Manley. You’ve got great beaches, a lively little town and take the ferry in to Sydney each day into the harbour. Best views of the bridge and Opera House you can get.

I sorted my own tickets in advance.

Have fun

I used Malaysia once and had a bad journey with unnecessary delays and the stop over in KL wasn't great either. I wouldn't endorse them but Ive only flown with them once and loathe to use them again with better alternatives.

That’s the worry with going to them tests the Ashes could already be over and England have retain the Ashes after walloping the Aussie this summer to regain them.

I'm also keen to do 2025 but it will be between the Euros in Germany and WC in the States - not sure my wallet will stretch that far!

Maybe 2029 it is.

Do not do the packages as they are a rip off. Same with getting tickets off the Barmy Army. As you say you are paying for their jollies. Take a bit of time and do it yourself. We went to Adelaide and Brisbane with a few days in Sydney in between. Loved Sydney and stayed at a great apartment with views of the bridge on the edge of the Kings Cross area. Great place loads of bars and nightlife. Only issue was the weather. Freezing some days(in comparison to what we expected) about 10 degrees. Hailstones other days. One of their worst summers for years.

The Ashes are at the very start of an Aussie summer. The weather in Melbourne and Sydney can be awful.
Even Perth can disappoint in early December - and the best climate is definitely there. I've frozen my nuts off out of the sun at the Waca.

Being in an arrogant Aussie crowd on the wrong end of an Ashes tonking is just miserable, so bear that in mind.
Go to Australia - it is fabulous - I love the convenience of Emirates from Newcastle.

Would love to do the trip but I don't think I could keep my mouth shut in drink with those Aussie *******. Anything is possible with stokes so I wouldn't rule out a result a result over there

I lived in Sydney for over thirty years and have lived the past twenty years in Queensland but often go back to Sydney
and was there for a few weeks over xmas.

For me, if you are only going to be in Sydney for the duration of a test match, I suggest that you couldn't go wrong by choosing the City itself.
You will have a huge range of hotels or serviced apartments to chose from as well as being moments away from all that Sydney has to offer.

Circular Quay and the Rocks area being the oldest and historic part of Sydney, Darling Harbour with its restaurants and casinos and of course the
Opera House and the Harbour bridge ( which I was a crane operator on for over ten years ).

Personally though, my preference would be Bondi Junction.
It has a fantastic bus and train public transport system which will easily/ regularly get you to not only the city and elsewhere but to all the wonderful eastern
suburbs beaches including Bondi, ( Coogee my favourite) Bronte, Tamarama, Clovelly, Maroubra and La Perouse which is a calm beach as it
is located inside Botany Bay. It also has a fantastic seafood restaurant overlooking the bay.

You will also be a shortish bus ride away from the most exclusive suburbs of Sydney such as Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, Dover Heights and Watsons Bay.
The SCG is a short bus ride away but it's also an easy walk, The City itself by bus twenty minutes.
Someone mentioned Manly. I was there recently and I've no complaints, we enjoyed our day there and the ferry ride is wonderful but asides from the ferry
which is about half an hour trip, to get there any other than by way of ferry is a nightmare and for me, is too far away from all the City sights and attractions.

I don't have to stay in hotel accommodation when visiting Sydney as we have friends and relatives living there, however, there have been times when we have
needed to and we always stay at the Meriton serviced apartments in Bondi Junction. I don't know if I have just been lucky but have always had a harbour facing
apartment with wonderful city and harbour views.

Melbourne, not famed for beaches would see me stay in the city itself. Great restaurants and fantastic tram service.

Personally I wouldn't use Jetstar to travel interstate as they have let me down many times in the past with last minute cancelations or overbooking.
We for the past ten years have used Virgin and have never had an issue and is only slightly more expensive than Jetstar.

Good luck with it all mate and no need to worry about the Aussies after a test loss.
They love the fact that we get so insulted when they call us a " pommie basta3d" and so they do it even more. To ignore them is to rile them.
I've experienced the " Pom Bashing" for well over fifty years and assure you that it is all in good fun and simply just banter and I've loved every minute
of it although I would have had so much more fun had England, in any sport, managed to have beaten them a lot more often. I always seem to be on
the receiving end than the giving.
