Aston Villa

My personal oppinion is he'll end up back here on loan with an obligation to buy upon any possible promotions.
What I will say is I think we're a tad pessimistic about what Boro are willing to spend as there is clearly cash there for the right purchase.
We very much wanted Larsen but wouldn't go past £9million and it seemed like we were All In with Archer and wanted him permanently but Villa said no and that won't have been cheap.

I think similar to the season after Karanka lost the play offs there is money in the pot for signings and there's a level of trust between Gibbo, Carrick and the recruitment team where he knows going to be getting his money's worth.

Crowds were up, we're in a good place with FFP after a couple of years of getting rid of big earners and selling some assets. There's a few possible outs this season to. If Boca don't pay £5million for Payero by all accounts somebody else will pay Treble for some reason. Chuba will not leave for less than £15million either.

Financially I think this is the best position we've been in for years to have a damn good go

I think @h_m_boro is right about Archer. There's more chance of another club coming in from the Prem and taking him on loan or signing him which will mean we miss out. Ramsay is more of realistic target for us on loan.
Remember that premier league sides can only loan 1 player from another premier league side. That really limits the number of players who can be loaned. Also no team wants to loan to a rival.

The entire list of prem-to-prem loans last summer are, below, just 9 players, split into 3 key motivations for the loans:

GK:
- Henderson (Utd to Forest) : GK is specialist position
- Martin Dubravka (Newcastle to Man Utd) : GK is specialist position

Trying to get players wages off the books:
- Shane Duffy (Brighton to Fulham) : experienced defender
- Conor Coady (Wolves to Everton) : loan with a view to sell
- Jan Banarek (Southampton to Villa) : Squad filler
- Daniel James (Leeds to Fulham) : Leeds trying to find a buyer for James
- Jack Stephens (Southampton to Bournemouth)

Young players getting game time:
- Levi Colwill (Chelsea to Brighton) : very young defender
- Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Arsenal to Southampton) : Young player game time

Just two players that fall into the young future star getting prem experience category. Colwill and Maitland-Niles. I'm 100% that Ramsey won't go to a prem side, and I'm 60% that Archer won't...maybe he'll be in the championship, but maybe he'll go to Germany/Holland/Italy.

Agree with this...for a PL club to use up their loan on Archer, with the expectation of Villa being he would get a lot of game time, would be one heck of a risk (assuming that side would be lower half). And again agree...zero chance of PL side going for Ramsey imo.

I’ve always said the best thing for us was for them to qualify for Europe then they would have a right go in the transfer market, making players who were now where near there team last season even more surplus to requirements. The report I read earlier said they are looking to upgrade all over the pitch and only 3/4 players are safe.

If they buy a couple of strikers I have no doubt whatsoever Archer will be made available, in one form or another. Whether they want him to go the Championship or Premier League remains to be seen, but if it’s Championship I’ve no doubt he will come here.

I think Ramsey will come back to us regardless.

The play off games showed Archer needs to develop other attributes to make it in the premier league. Personally think he is worth about 15M. Would Villa sell him for that and would he want to come to Boro permanently? Possibly no to both. Likewise Ramsey isn’t ready for the premier league yet either. I’d buy both if we could afford it. Still not sure what the summer holds, but certainly exciting. Villa also have that young lad who was on loan at QPR - Iregoboam (sp.). He looked a promising midfielder. Reckon he will be out on loan too next season in the championship.

I agree. Villa’s success certainly helps our case of getting the lads back.

Unai Emery is one of the best managers in Europe. Aston Villa are very lucky to have him.
So much disrespect to Emery when he was at Arsenal and maybe wrong club at the wrong time, but his CV, trophies and the way he gets teams playing is sensational. He’s done an unreal job at Villa so far.

Fair play to Villa, for some reason they’re one of the few ‘old money’ clubs that I quite like seeing do well.

I just have a feeling that we will be buying Archer, for the following reasons:

Boro's Side:
- Intent is already there - we have tried to sign him permanently before and had to settle for a loan.
- Bringing back a player who excelled, we know we are getting goals.
- Our FFP position is the best it has been for years (big earners etc gone from books, pure profit sales from homegrown players last year, modest wage bill).
- As stated above, management / hierarchy seems to be much more aligned than it has been in recent years with regards to clubs' philosophy / style / players coming in.

Villa:
- He will be surplus to requirements at Villa as they will be backing Emery in his first summer window.
- They can command a decent fee to aid their FFP (which is further enhanced as he is homegrown - 100% profit).

Archer:
- Cleary has a good relationship with Boro management team (knew Danks from Villa, Carrick seems to have got the best out of him).
- Knows he will be the main man in a team (hopefully) pushing for promotion.

Premier League Clubs:
- As above, Prem clubs can only loan one other player from another Prem club. Whilst Archer is clearly talented, that's a big risk for any manager in the bottom half of the league to take as he has never played in the Prem before.
- It's also a risk to spend ~15m on a striker who has never played in the league - just can't see that happening.

Championship Clubs:
- If he is coming on loan to a Championship club, it will be to us - regardless of a fee included or not. There's no way we will let him go to another Championship club on loan. Personally, I can't see why he would want to go to another club other than us in the Championship either, we're currently the bookies favourites to go up (I get this doesn't mean anything in reality, but add this to the fact he's already been working here and we're still fancied to go up, why would you go anywhere else..?)
- With regards to being bought by a relegated club; Southampton - already seem well stacked in that position for this league, Leeds - seem to be in a complete mess, not sure what is going to happen there, Leicester - seem to be in serious financial difficulty, couldn't see them spending ~15m on Archer, they will be hoping Vardy's legs haven't gone and he can fire them straight back up.

Ramsey will be back on loan too, I reckon.

I thought premier teams could loan 2 other premier team player but only 1 from each club. That said, interesting to see only 9 loan deals between Premier league teams and you could argue only Henderson was a clear starter.

Yeah you are correct. A Premier League club can have two long term loans from another domestic club, but only one from and one club.

Football Manager knowledge finally came in handy in real life 🙌
