Automatic car question

In my old 15 plate Seat Leon i always kept my foot on the brake, otherwise the car would move forward. in my new 19 plate Leon i seem to be able to take my foot off the brake and the car stays where it is. I'm not sure if this is to do with the latter having an electronic handbrake or not.

I've had a couple of automatics. Well DSG (same ish thing). I don't think I ever used neutral other than parking up over night etc. Just kept it in drive for lights / junctions.

I'm sure some will say I've been doing it wrong. Yet never had any issues.

No. I would say this is what most people do!

It's certainly what I used to do when I had an auto ICE car and never had an issue.

I leave mine in drive, if there for some time I apply the electric hand brake, then tap the accelerator to de-select the handbrake and then pull away.

When I learned to drive I was told to always apply the handbrake at traffic lights and roundabouts. The reason being that if you sit with your foot on the footbrake and someone hits you from behind, your foot will inevitably slip off the brake and you will be shunted into moving traffic or the car in front. I drive a 7.7 tonne truck at work and always use the hand brake in these situations even though I'm unlikely to feel a shunt.

I believe the advice for any car is that if you are idling for more than five seconds then apply the handbrake.
I believe applying the handbrake when stationary is the law. I don't but I broke bad as soon as I passed my test.
