Average ball in play of NFL, Rugby, Football

I thought this was fascinating.

Of a full game of each sport roughly average ball in play time of each sport is as follows

NFL- 11 minutes- Game length is 60 minutes but it will go on for about 3 hours

Rugby- 34 minutes of an 80 minute game

Premier League Football- 54 minutes of a 90 minute game

Mad that in the NFL people watch about 11 minutes of actual ball play?

Also, Football isn't that bad for actual ball in play. Perhaps the time wasting can be better.

NFL is not really comparable because play is stopped when the ball goes dead (a bit like cricket in that respect?)

Surprised that rugby and football are so similar in terms of percentage (42% vs 60%)

Most of the time the ball is in play in football there is nothing happening. Players playing the ball around at the back etc whereas NFL is a smaller amount of action but it is all action.

NFL is about more than the ball actually being in play though. You have all the player movements pre snap to take into consideration too.
You can't really make the comparison between that and football as they are completely different in terms of flow. If football allowed you to make unlimited substitutions then it might be a fair comparison.

Can't make a comparison with rugby either due to the scrums. It would be worth the wait if the ball had to be fed in to the middle instead of straight into the second row. I suspect if they scrapped scrums rugby would be less entertaining as at least they tie up half the team in one part of the pitch and create a bit more space for attacking rugby.

What rugby is that? Has to be the posh boys version. I reckon rugby league will be about 55 minutes.

The reason I'm not a fan of NFL is that every time it looks like a game is going to break out that bit of the game ends and it's on to the next set peice, there's no flow.

A bit like watching boro under pulis.

League has the middle ground though doesn't it? Best of both worlds. The team that's awarded the scrum is guaranteed the ball but, as yiu say, it draws the forwards away and creates space
