.... back at number 10 then

A few really serious points about this.

This unnamed ex Premier League player had been accused of the absolute worst crime there is, and has lost his career and probably a hell of a lot more than that because of it - and still might be guilty, which seems to be the inference from the PR statements.

But the CPS have decided there’s not enough evidence to prosecute. This is after 2 years of investigations.

This news story was also 14th news item down on the sports pages of the Guardian, nowhere to be seen on the BBC.

Unlike the original allegations and arrest, which was headline news for ages. And now you’ve either got a totally innocent guy who’s been accused of something really dreadful which was false, took two years and the end of his career to work that out, and now no-one cares about clearing his name; or you’ve got someone who is as guilty as hell but on whatever technicality or withdrawal of evidence or any kind of legal fuckery has got away with it, but he’s still walking around in the world and will have to have a life somewhere, which presumably will not be back in Premier League football.

Is all this right? It doesn’t feel right.

It will be interesting to see what his club do, given that there is evidence against him, just not enough to support a prosecution ie not enough to realistically secure a conviction.

I would be surprised to see him playing in the PL again.

That article makes the same mistake that so many people make. It says you are innocent until proven guilty. You are not. You are presumed to be innocent until proven otherwise. It's an important distinction. Of topic a bit. It's very dissatisfying for everyone involved. It doesn't work for the alleged victim, their family or the accused.

Unfortunately, its the only way a legal system can work fairly.

I think whenever someone's suspected of any sexual offence they are assumed guilty until proven innocent, it's something in our culture aided and abetted by the tone of media coverage around the story
Yeah, really well put that. I dunno, the media aspects of it make me rage a bit but overall just feel a sense of injustice for absolutely everyone involved. Only posted here because there’s a football angle and there’s some level-headed intelligent people on here who might be able to make sense of it. The whole thing with a lot of these very public cases doesn’t seem fair to either the victims or the accused.
