If you ever get chance, look into the story of David Marshall.
A young lad from Boro who jumped out of the bedroom window of his parents house to go and fight the fascists in Spain.
He went on to storm Normandy and fight across to Belsen which he helped liberate.
Incredible life and saw some things.

just re-watched episode 9, was more upsetting than I remember. the casting in band of brothers is superb, what an amazing series.
