Basil Fawlty now scolded

In my opinion Fluffy that’s a yes . As much as anything who holds the wisdom/authority to make such a decision?

What a pathetic inference, deary me, how sad, never mind.

It is clearly my message to some (most likely but not exclusively) white male posters on a Boro messageboard silly, I had assumed you would realise that. If it was to the entire black community, I would have chosen a different media. Grow up Atypical and as my mam used to say play nice or not at all!!
'Play nice' - interesting use of words given some of your comments in the same post.

Sorry, it wasn't clear that your comment should almost exclusively be read/interpreted by white males only.

Major's use of the N (and W word) are categorically racist. Anyone denying this needs to watch them again.

The Major is categorically racist which was why he is the butt of the joke.

To quote Cleese “The Major was an old fossil left over from decades before. We were not supporting his views, we were making fun of them,” and he further added “If they can’t see that, if people are too stupid to see that, what can one say?"

I'm aware of Cleese's view. He's a big hero of mine. That said, his view on this isn't bullet proof, just because he wrote the joke. I mean, he's going to defend his own joke isn't he?

But, as I explained on the Little Britain thread, there is a big difference between the delivery of this joke (and the roar of studio audience laughter which follows, which I think is as much the issue as the joke itself), and some of the also 'racist' jokes in the Office which are intended to leave the viewer cringing at his racism (Brent, Gareth) rather than howling at his brazeness (Major).

Also, worth pointing out that the Major's portrayal in the show is largely presented as 'loveable' rather than cringeworthy to the edge of believability (like Brent, Gareth etc).

I felt your comment deserved the response it received, given your disappointing inference. You purposefully chose to edit one line from my post to distort my full comments in the round, possibly in an attempt to belittle, who knows, your sarcastic response above does you no favours either, shame you went there.

Only you know the reasons why you went there, I can hazard a guess mind, others appear to have understood my post clearly enough. Anyway, at least on the bright side, you appear to have a ‘special new wingman‘ latch onto you these days, call sign ‘Fuzzbert‘ I gather (after the troll with no face). I wouldn’t try to venture down sniper alley with him riding shotgun for you though.

Good luck and enjoy your afternoon, I will leave it there (y)

Look Atypical, read the seriousness of what you suggested again and see how that reads especially in the context of this debate, then read your subsequent sarcastic response. I do not want an argument and I am sure other posters don’t want to read one either. In todays climate it was unnecessary and I felt my response was measured. If I have caused offence to you I am sorry but I have a right to reply when offended.

Of course thats right but then again that was the same defence for the character Alf Garnett and indeed the white fella in Love they Neighbour. They were the butt of the jokes but didn't stop them being removed from the schedules. This isn't a new thing at all.

The N word was removed from the great bastion of British films the Dambusters twenty years ago.

Ok, your first comment above came across as very authoritarian, as have a couple of your other posts on the subject full of capital letters (ie shouting). It didn't offend me, I just thought it wasn't a very good point, so I asked exactly who you were addressing with it. You are not the oracle on this subject, no one is.

What is really, really important and so many can’t, don’t or simply won’t grasp, is the Importance of living in the here and now. It is doing that which really shapes all our futures. I understand people being offended by not having equality of opportunity in the here and now, but the past is gone. Instead of wallowing about the past, understand it, learn from it and use the knowledge to shape the future constructively.

The power of reflection is extremely strong, removing the past from view limits others ability to see it, educate themselves on it and then reflect in the future. Evidence of the past is vital to keep, to ensure future generations can learn from It. I suppose some must think ISIS demolishing the cultural heritage of Palmyra was perhaps a good thing. Maybe we should remove Hadrian's wall as it is a reminder of invasion and an affront what with them calling those that lived to the North Barbarians. Oh, lets remove the memorials at Bannockburn so we the English are not offended. Same at Flodden Field to avoid offence to our Scottish cousins. It is truly never ending and really sad.

I just wish some people actually put as much effort into ‘being kind‘ as they seem to enjoy doing into ‘being offended’ on behalf of themselves and others, maybe then, real progress could begin to be made.

Good post Coluka!(y)
