BBC Tees have wound up Chuba Akpom

I have listened to what Drury said. He has clearly been speaking to somebody within the club purely from his knowledge of Chuba & Jonny. H expected to be being back in training. He has clearly been primed with insider information, from who though is the key, Carrick? Woody? Bausor? Scott? or a mixture of them?

I suspect it won’t have been Gibson, Carrick or Woody. My money would be on Scott more than Bausor. I read things as the club are wanting a certain narrative conveyed as a back story to say we’ve tried, we offered a decent contract but the player was out of reach financially. They claimed they now operate within certain parameters and wont budge from it, fair enough…… to a degree.

I suspect Chuba’s agent will have been in touch with a few clubs in the Championship as well as one or two from the PL. I think (and its pure assumption) the club are wanting to sell to enable purchases but they know Chuba has gone from zero to hero with the fans. I think they are laying the groundwork for self protection. We mustn’t assume Chuba wont be playing against us next season, it is entirely feasible a Championship club may be willing to offer £10M+ for him and meet his wage demands too, no reason it hhas to be a PL side. Boro would happily sell to Coventry, WBA as well as a Sheffield, Luton or WHU if the money generates the signings they need to make. I think Chuba is open to staying but his agent will have figures from others and Chuba wants them matching. I don’t blame him either.

There is a lot of cat and mouse going on, Boro have been let down with a gentleman’s agreement with Giles, sounds like we have been our usual naive selves as we were January 2017 (imho). They should have concluded it when they had the chance and Luton would have been missing out. I suspect now we may have a few understandings in place subject to certain criteria and am guessing we maybe need to generate some money but want more certainty on those irons in the fire before releasing Chuba. I think he is off, but not necessarily because he wants to, though the waters are muddy. I am clearly reading between the lines, maybe wrongly, but I think the club are trying to generate a position where they claim to have done all they could, but we had to sell to avoid him walking, when more likely in my opinion they need to sell to refresh the squad to bring in additional quality.

Just my thoughts like I say, all will come out in the wash, us fans are taken for granted at times but on the back of the SC sales I’d have thought it was the right time to invest in the squad and inject more quality than they appear willing to do. They have the ffp power to do so, but I appreciate fingers have been burned in the past and the clubs attitude to risk seems low at present, which in the climate I can understand. Last season was an opportunity missed that doesn’t look likely this year as things stand, but there is time.

How many clubs sack employees nicely and without any fuss ?

How do you know we promised Downing a coaching role, was it announced ?

Besides as others have pointed out Warnock has peddled at least two different stories about how he came to lose his job.
Without wishing to labour the point, the shabby treatment of Warnock wasn't about how he was sacked, it's about how he was treated when we came to pick up his things.

I suppose the response, will be that's Warnock's version of events? I could accept that if it was a rare occurence, but as I'm trying to point out there are many examples over the years of the club parting ways in an undignified way. Look at Gareth Southgate, again someone who I thought should have been sacked the previous season, but then he's sacked after a home win!

My original post was agreeing with ForssAwakens, Warnock's an example....maybe not the best, but what I'm trying to point out is that there are plenty over the years and I can see the same thing happening with Akpom!

But there's not "many examples over the years" there's very few over what the past 16 years, and even most of them are debatable, that's my point. You're choosing to believe Warnock over anything else because it suits your narrative. You quote Downing, where's the evidence for that one ?

So are you now saying we shouldn't sack managers if, in the opinion of Gibson, they're under performing ? The fact that Southgate was sacked after a win is irrelevant, or should we only sack managers after a 6-0 defeat ?

What about all the examples where players have left thanking the club for their time here (Tav, Archer, Steffen for example), or do they not fit your narrative?

Best agree to disagree on this one!

Fully expect the club is wanting fans to believe he wanted too much and that’s why we had to sell him

Such a shame, from a huge position of strength with the best manager we will have at this level, and we don’t want to capitalise on it
I don’t particularly mind if we don’t want to pay Akpom £40k pw if that’s the new model but we don’t need to sully his name either. We are willing to pay x but he wants(and deserves btw) more so we sell him instead, it doesn’t need to be any more dramatic than that.

Akpom is loved by the fans, if we do need to part ways with him then I’d rather we did it on good terms, seems like a really great guy.

Was he that great at sorting the club out? He sold our best assets for cheap and brought in absolute cloggers. As far as I can tell, we were no better off when he left.
Was it him who sold them? The only bit we saw Pulis do was manage the team

MY TWOPENNETH

1. I think the club is trying to sell Chuba Akpom.
2. I don't think the club had any intention of buying Ryan Giles.

The tweets stack up, the transfer activity stacks up..

100% agree with this.

The problem from the clubs point of view is if Akpom for whatever reason doesn't perform this season, gets injured, loses his confidence, etc...

It's Akpom's best and possibly last chance of a big contract, but it could be the clubs best and possibly last chance of a big fee for him too.

being doing some relflection on this

All this will do now will drive akpoms
Price down, thank you Mark
He is a journalist. He has been fed information from a club source, he reported on it shock. If anyone is to blame it is the club or its source or both. I am not a Drury fan by any stretch, he is a journalist doing his job. If it isn’t true don’t you think the club will act on his words, history tells me they would impose some sanction. If they don’t, and they won’t, because It suited for whatever reason the clubs stance. I think he is off and the club are painting a narrative to reduce fan upset when he is moved on. It wouldn’t surprise me if he has a better offer from a rival as much as a PL team and we need the money to bring in others.
