Bernie

I
Why have you deleted the original post?

I managed to read it last night and agree with every word. I watch one of Bernie's Facebook live sessions the other night and he talked about Leo stinking out the place and being part of the problem. He said that any coach with something about them would not have stayed on to work under the number of managers he has. He also criticised the fans for chanting his name.

I generally like Slaven's analyse but this was out of order in my opinion. It's obvious why he been kept on, and I am proud of the club for acting in such a way. For him to get that win last night would have been so emotional for himself and his family. I'm pleased Slaven's views on this are firmly in the minority.

I loved Slaven as a player, Christ knows he’d have buried the few chances that fell our way last night.
I genuinely can’t understand his bitterness.
He’ll always have cult status, in my mind anyway, he was part of My Boro team, when I fell in love for the first time (corny I know).
Leo has a similar cult status, therefore I can’t fathom why Bernie doesn’t get it. UTB

Found his take absolutely hideous.
We chant for a man who took to us just like we took to him.
All the way from Brazil the outpouring of love from Teesside in his darkest moment formed an eternal bond between our area and the man and his family.
His children support Boro, he and his family are one of us.

It is very similar to Aitor Karanka. He took to us, we took to him, along side Leo they achieved great things, achievements that have cemented their legend.
When he comes back he gets a clap and a chant, if he ever went through anything like Leo, we have his back. Are we now supposed to love coaches who've brought happiness to us all because they stood on the sidelines?

He said If you're a striker and you're hearing Leo's name chanted you'll be annoyed wondering why not me?
Well I'm sorry but did Britt, Fletcher, Gestede, Emnes or any of the other egotistical strikers get the crows going?

There's a reason that despite scoring less goals Kike is still to this day adored, he bloody endeared himself to the Boro fans.

Bernie is a legend, his story in wonderful but If he thinks just because you're a striker getting 8 a season you deserve your names sang from the rafters over Leo you're dead wrong

TBF though people used to complain about him being negative even back then. But it was sort of his role to be the antithesis of Brownlee.

Bernie seemed to get himself wound up when speaking about Leo in that video - I found it a bit bizarre.

He mentioned that being from a council estate in Glasgow, after the 1st or 2nd manager had left he'd have accepted that he was part of the problem and left, as that's the way he is.

Absolute nonsense. Leo did leave not long after Karanka was sacked. He was brought back mainly as a gesture of solidarity after what he'd been through, and because of the amazing connection he has with the fanbase, and I'm proud of the club for giving him the opportunity - I'd like to think it helped him get through what must have been an unbelievably dark period in his life, and I hope it's still helping him get through it now.

The other comment he made about how he'll be at the club a long time, longer than Leo who will disappear back to the other side of the world gives me the impression that Bernie is almost jealous of the adulation Leo receives from the fans.

or maybe he lacks a bit of empathy that the general fan has towards Leo
I actually think he has beef with Leo. Something to do with Karanka not liking his comments about something and Aitor getting Leo to have a go at him. He talked about it on his podcast a while back. You won't ever find Slaven being especially complementary about Karanka or Leo.

Hignett mentioned that Karanka had gotten Leo to tell him that he wasn't required on the training pitch after they'd had a fall-out, so there may be some truth to this.

Even if Bernie does have personal beef with Leo though, his comments are insensetive when you remember what Leo has been through. Sometimes it's better to not say anything.

Yeah, its definitely personal the more I think back to Slaven's podcast. Leo is popular, Bernie has to just accept that.

I remember him turning shytty when folks were bigging up Bamford!! Lol I think it’s an ego thing

As an aside I wonder if Leo and Karanka still keep in touch at all? Fell out didn't they?

Bernie - I know you're reading this. Try to let bygones be bygones if you can mate. But you're still my boyhood hero and we all still love you 😘
