Yeah, as cooling for the reactor. Didn't realise until I went looking for this artwork that the book was written as the film was planned! The number of times I've read the book and watched the movie n'all 😀 It's describes best in the book when he says it looks like a dragonfly, but no-one in the fan art community agrees with the vision I always had of it in my minds eye...1711065191288.jpg

This thread has my nerd sensors on full alert. Any craft from the Wing Commander games. That was my youth in a nut shell. (well late teens/early 20s)
 
I had the Interceptor from UFO as a kid - with real firing rocket
Always struck me as a pretty hopeless spaceship - miss the target and they'd be a sitting duck - although, to be fair, they rarely seemed to miss.
