Big Win/Loss Reaction

I haven't got any particular stats to back this up but I have noticed that after a team has a big win like we did on Saturday that the next match can be something of an anti climax with a possible surprise result.
Hopefully, this won't apply to the Boro.

On the other hand a team that takes a severe beating like Reading did can bounce back and surprise their next opponents.
Hopefully, this will apply to Reading.

Yeah i've never noticed but i could believe it. It's down to man management i suppose, i hope Carrick let them celebrate the win for half an hour and then focus on the next game, attention should shift. We've won one game, we need to win promotion so hopefully they don't get carried away & same goes for when you've took a hiding, you'd expect the manager to go through them and they'd be so focused to put it right in the next game.

In line with this, I expect Man utd to absolute smash Betis on Thursday.

Ours was a big scoreline but it wasn't a big result. It was a comfortable win against a rubbish team. That sort of anti-climax is more likely to happen after a big game, like the Sheff Utd win but we went and won the next one which shows good management by Carrick and co.

Teams that get battered do always speak about putting it right as soon as possible. Both Reading and Sheff Utd lost so would be in similar mindsets. I have a feeling (or at least a hope) that because Reading are used to getting battered away and then winning at home it will be easier to distance themselves from the result whereas Sheff Utd are in slump they are struggling to get out of so there will be a lot more going on mentally to contend with.

The flipside of this is that I think MC's team has been extremely good at bouncing back from defeat.

Defeats against Burnley and Sunderland did not see us crumble; they saw us go on 4-5 match winning streaks. We bounced back from defeat at WBA very well too.

For me, this speaks volumes for being able to put the last match behind them as soon as it's done.

Briefly looking at Sheff Utd results - earlier in the season they beat Reading 4-0 then won the next 3 on the bounce. They beat Burnley 5-2 then lost at home to Rotherham. maybe its not the score line but the standard of opposition? A 'big win' is more about who you play than the scoreline?

Similarly Watford beat Burnley then drew away at Birmingham.

There may be something in it but I cant be bothered to do the stats...

We didn't seem to have much of a hangover from big wins there.

I don't think there'll be any complacency.

Our losses under Carrick, with the exception of Preston, tend to have just been because the opposition did a job on us rather than any lack of effort.

Statistically a single result makes no difference on the next game, assuming they are not linked in any way, like 2 legged ties.

Overall performance does impact the next result, statistically. If you have won 5 on the bounce you are more likely to do well in your next game. If you win 5 on the bounce then loose 1 you are still very likely to do well in your next match because overall, performances and results are good.

I don't know what impact attitude has on games. Its, almost, impossible to measure.
