Went to see Bill Ryder Jones last night at The Brudenell and what a gig. Keep telling people about how good his album Iechyd Da is (gonna be album of the year for me, no doubt about it) but hearing it last night live surpassed expectations. He was on brilliant form despite a few technical issues and the band he had with him were exceptional. Strings, slide guitar, keys all thrown into the mix to create a beautiful sound. But when he also wanted to let loose on the electric guitar he showed himself off as one of the best guitarists of his generation. So good.

go and check this years album out as he deserves to be bigger than he is, although not sure he wants the fame particularly.

I loved his first solo album, I think he’s a very underrated talent. I wanted to go and see him at Union Chapel but by the time I’d heard he was touring the tickets had sold out.

Get on Twickets. That's how I got mine. I'd seen him a few times so wasn't that bothered when he announced he was touring. But as soon as I heard the album I knew I needed to see him but it had sold out by then. I've had an alert set up on Twickets and loads of notifications for his gigs around the country so you might get lucky.

West Kirby County Primary was a great album. Daneil, Seabirds, Wild Roses and Two to Birkenhead were all played last night. I wasn't as sold on Yawn and he only played a couple of tracks from it last night so maybe he feels the same!

Majority of the set was made up of songs from Iechyd Da. Normally when seeing someone live and they play mostly new stuff it's a bit of a let down but not last night

Excellent, I’d never heard of Twickets before now but just set up an account and an alert. Thanks!

I genuinely think he's pretty unparalleled as a songwriter in this country at present (and probably has been for a while). Seen him a few times and never fails to impress - from a raucous Xmas homecoming gig in Liverpool a few years back to solo with just piano.

Off to see him in Birmingham tomorrow night, can't wait.

He's brilliant. Produced local lass Amelia Coburn's debut album that came out last week too.
Also produced Mick Head's previous album Dear Scott which was excellent as well. Clearly very talented. He's set his own studio up in West Kirby so getting to work on a lot of other people's albums.

Noticed that Amelia Coburn's name crop up a few times recently. Will have to give it a listen

Love Bill Ryder Jones. Such a great talent, but my God has he got problems. Glad the Brudenell went well. Last time I saw him was at The Piece Hall a few years ago and he was so out of it, he could barely string two words together. He took some hammer from the crowd and just kept apologising. I think he gave his fee to charity. There's a really good recent interview with him on youtube.... shouldn't be hard to find, He's just sitting in his living room in West Kirby.

His brother fell off a cliff top and died when they were kids playing on holiday. Obviously, affected him really badly. He was in The Coral from when he was 16 too which probably isn't the best enivornment for a teenager coming off the back of grieving his brother.

Saw him at Deer Shed a few years back and he wasn't on good form then either but he alluded to the fact last night that he was drinking less. Said it's made him less funny but better in bed!!! You could see in the performance that he was more with it. Don't get me wrong there are rough edges and technical issues but that's part of the "slacker" charm.

Definitely struggles with his mental health and anxiety when up on stage and I think he has tried to use the alcohol (and whatever else) to try and cover that up. Hopefully he is in a better place and the reception the new album has received will help.

He played Daniel last night and dedicated it to his brother. Gets me every time that track

I do like this lad but his problems are well known, poor lad.
I read an interesting article about him owning one of Peter Green's old Les Pauls(not the Garry Moore one) via Noel Gallagher. The Coral were recording an album in Gallaghers studio and he used it and it sounds as though he still has it.
Its a good job he has it - wasted on Noel Gallagher. Like feeding truffles to pigs.

He’s produced swim deep’s new album too, they’ve just released what I think is the best song they’ve put out in a long time. Can really hear the Bill Ryder Jones influence

Just wanted to say thanks very much to you anth, I’ve just got myself a couple of tickets for the Union Chapel gig this Wednesday night! I can’t wait for it. Should be a great setting for him as well.
Ah that's great news. Hope he is on good form for you. Been reading about the Manchester gig from over the weekend and it sounds like it was out of this world. Only recently started using Twickets but it seems great
