Bill Ryder Jones

Peak BRJ this one.

Closed the set on Friday night.

He was incredible in Birmingham, him and the band sounding incredibly tight. The new stuff really is quite a departure live, almost sounds like a different band at times (albeit one that is also amazing!)

Heard some incredible things about MCR the night after as well, with Bill himself tweeting that it was one of the top five nights of his life!

How was last night?
Honestly, it was absolutely amazing. I’d give it 10/10 tbh. He was on fire. As was his band.

It was actually at Islington Assembly Hall, not Union Chapel. I won’t lie, we were panicking when we arrived at the chapel at half 7 and the massive wooden doors were locked. We rang the number on the door and it wasn’t recognised. I checked the ticket just to double check and noticed it said Islington Assembly Hall, NOT Union Chapel. I then had to lie to my other half and say “well DICE said it was Union Chapel, it’s a disgrace,” etc.

All of that faff and fuss was immediately gone when we got to the gig though. Pet Snake was playing and her stuff was absolutely lovely. And then Saint Saviour came on and I knew instantly she was a Teessider. She was fantastic. Really good.

And then Bill. Honestly I’ve never seen an audience in the palm of someone’s hand like that before. It was absolutely magical. People were so relaxed and into it, gently swaying and nodding along, having their own little moments… it was total bliss. It might sound like I’m exaggerating but I’m not, it was just beautiful. No d***heads, no drunk people, nobody doing anything other than just becoming absorbed in the music. Totally listening and lost, somewhere else.

The band was excellent, really tight. They played a good set of stuff, loads of old and loads of new. I’d go and see him again tomorrow if I could. He was brilliant.

Thanks for the heads up about the tickets, me and my other half had a brilliant time and have listened to his music all day today. I’m chuffed we got see him play!

Ah that's great. Sounds like a brilliant night once the stressful bit was over.

The crowd sound very similar to Leeds. Totally in awe and appreciative of the genius they were witnessing.

Have you seen he is doing the new album in full at Barbican (I think) with full string section. Will be pretty special just a bit too much of a trek from Leeds

Went to see Bill Ryder Jones last night at The Brudenell and what a gig. Keep telling people about how good his album Iechyd Da is (gonna be album of the year for me, no doubt about it) but hearing it last night live surpassed expectations. He was on brilliant form despite a few technical issues and the band he had with him were exceptional. Strings, slide guitar, keys all thrown into the mix to create a beautiful sound. But when he also wanted to let loose on the electric guitar he showed himself off as one of the best guitarists of his generation. So good.

go and check this years album out as he deserves to be bigger than he is, although not sure he wants the fame particularly.

Thanks for the recommendation, Lechyd Da and A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart pretty much in repeat for the last couple of weeks 👍

Wished you'd posted this before he was touring in UK 😂
