Boro ‘fans’

The town of Middlesbrough used to have a coach call “Middlesbrough Whites” that would go to Leeds, don’t know if it still does?

There are hardly any Mackems in Stockton. At school we had one Sunderland fan in our year (of 100). He was called Mackem. If I had to guess, I'd say for every 100 people that like football you'd have 60% Boro, 25% Liverpool/Man U, 10% Geordies, 2% Mackems, 3% Other. This was 20 years ago so I presume the glory fans support other teams now and our support has dropped with being out of the PL but that will have gone to the glory teams, not Sunderland. If you only included people that actually attended matches then it would be 90% Boro because none of the glory fans had ever seen Anfield/Old Trafford.

No idea why Gibson made the claim. He must know it isn't true and I'm still not sure who he was trying to appeal to by having a go at a huge chunk of his fanbase. Gibson has always been a bit small-time in his mentality and seeing non-locals as unimportant. The club makes every effort to put off people that can't walk to the Riverside from their house. He should be looking outwards and trying to attract new fans.

When you say 'we', you don't actually mean that do you? You're clearly excluding yourself from that criticism. Why don't you just say so?
I thought the statement was pretty obvious in term of the use we. You don’t have to take it literal

Absolutely, also add in the Gibson comments about people north of the river, which were also used against him.
IT was not the fans fault for Gibson's own astounding ignorance. He was rightly criticised at the time for that, however I don't think it hasn't been used against him for years.

In terms of wilder, I think he's tried to be clever and deliberately non-comital. Its the sort of greedy strategy modern players and managers are probably taught as part of their coaching theory. However its backfired on him spectacularly, we have been through too much shiit over the years for managers to play mind games and Gibson's too long in the tooth for it as well. If trust is found to have been broken its going to be almost impossible to win back. Why people feel the need to turn it and have a go at their own fans i do not know, all wilder had to do is say I am not interest in anything apart from trying to get MFC back to the premier league. It was a shockingly bad answer.

There's a small Leeds following in Redcar, dwarfed by the amount of glory hunting utd, Liverpool, and probably even Chelsea (amongst the under 25s) there. Boro easily make up 70%+ of football support there and probably 95%+ of match goers

Not really you just don’t bite the hand that feeds.

If he’d have said Redcar If full of Leeds fans that wouldn’t have gone down well either.
I spent most of my teen years in Redcar, there is loads of Leeds, Celtic and Mags, So what! the amount of Boro from Redcar and East Cleveland is quite large anyway and they were noticeable in the mid 80's at AP and on the road as well, SG could have said about the Leeds in Redcar but we wouldn't have cared, maybe that is the difference between a Teessider and Makem sense of humour😉

It's the same in Exeter, but the local bunch of Leeds despite my dislike of anything Leeds do travel to Matches, so you have loads of plastics for the North West teams but they tend to just fill the local pubs for big matches, while the some young and some in their 50's whites will travel to Matches.

2 or 3 Sunderland fans in Norton - good lads!
Didn't know any in Billingham
There was an LUFC bus used to go from the Swan.

All in all, Stockton was 90%+ Boro! I think Mackem territory began north of Billingham and LUFC territory Northallerton. To the West, Sedegefield was Boro but not many in Darlo, Bishop etc

On a side note, I can remember going to Leeds away by car in ( think it was the game mcmahon got sent off) Anyway one of the lads had decided to drive down so he parked up and we went into a boozer near the station... Think it was Yates. Couple of pints and out we went as we were going to park up closer to the ground. As we came out past the station a load of boro lads had come off the train and were being surrounded by police across the road , they started giving us the usual anti Leeds verbals , we laughed and my mate shouted we're from Redcar... The lads started shouting back ' redcar Leeds wnakers' 😁 Still can't figure out whether they were joking or not

It isn't like. Starts anywhere south of Saltburn and Guisborough.
From my own experience it seems the border at Staithes being between Redcar and Cleveland and North Yorkshire is the defining point. South of Staithes, Whitby, etc is dirty Leeds territory, north of the village in Redcar and Cleveland is mostly Boro.

Derby County certainly are, but the chips on people's shoulder about Aitor was confusing, if anything he was too close the club and couldn't keep a calm head, he loved Boro and we should given that back in return.
He got love from the fans
