Boro borrow £7m against Akpom transfer

Are you having a laugh, my response explained why I don't think he has a proven track record to be appointed Sporting Director/Director of Football or whatever he is called.

He has never been a Director of Football, or anything else.
Norwich do not have a sparkling record of signing gems in the 4 years he was there as a Scout, or Head of Recruitment. Webber was the head man at Norwich.
They signed lots of players who amounted to nothing. Take a look on Transfermarket.com at Norwich's signings since 2017-18 season and what they have got from those players when they have left. Buendia is the one success.
Michael D described them as serial promotion winners. They are just as easy to be described as serial relegation specialists.
You’ve replied to the wrong person.

I asked what you have against Scott since he’s been at Boro.

He is not qualified to do the broad strategic job he supposedly has..
I really don't think his signings have been good. McGree, Boyd Munce, Clarke, Hoppe, Barlaser. Even the frees are fillers.
Forss is the only one I rate.

The summer window has been really disappointing from a recruitment and retention perspective.
Our squad is weaker.

The fees we have secured for our sales have been disappointing.

I think his communication style is evasive; uninspiring and abrasive when forced into the spotlight.

To an extent, Gibson has got us back to where we have normally been for around 70 years. Given where we were in '86 that's not a bad achievement but you can't really look back at the last 15 years as anything but mediocre at best. It doesn't help that the Premier league gravy train hurtled out of the station without us and we're now, like so many, desperately trying to get back to it at a time where Gibson's pockets are no longer deep enough to buy promotion from the Championship.
I agree with this - a game of 2 halves for Gibbo. Things have moved on in football and once powerful PL funding from Gibbo is now deemed in comparison decent but bare bones survival funding. We now have the position where all Championship clubs (without parachute payments) are living on the edge season by season and are taking the short term financial gamble for the PL prize. Investment in many Championship clubs is becoming unsustainable and unless there is a restructuring of how parachute payments work and redistribution of TV revenue across leagues then more clubs will sink or disappear.
The future depends on whether the football league cares if the gap between the PL and the rest continues to widen at this pace and if they're bothered if we start to lose some of the old stalwart clubs of English football.
This video analysis of Championship finances made at the start of this season sums up the position perfectly for me and shows what we are dealing with:

Championship Finances - Stupid League

Historically boro are most commonly somewhere between 15th and 30th.

International media investment makes it easier to support a team outside of your local area. Which has increased the focus on a smaller number of clubs (it isn't just the premier league - it has been a sports effect worldwide).

In many ways (and I think I am in the minority) I think a franchise based European Super League is what football needs. Which includes those clubs leaving domestic football.

The domestic leagues accept that they are functionally feeder leagues, but the teams in the domestic league pyramid can stop living outside their means.

I'm happy with where we are - a generally competitive championship team - I would be surprised to see us relegated and less surprised to see us promoted in the next 10 years.

Don't gamble too much - hope we hit on a few prospects. And enjoy watching competitive football week in week out.

What a depressing take.

What a depressing take.
The world changes - football internationally has had constant change over the 130-40 years it has been played professionally.

I think one of the problems is trying to serve both history and the reality of globalisation.

Doing the best in the reality you live in rather than expect things to be as they were when they were best for you will lead to depression.

Getting back to the original point about the loan/debt factoring. So unless these companies are releasing money to us out of the goodness of their hearts it further reduces the fee we got for Akpom and Tavernier as well.
You would have to know how the deal was structured in order for this to be meaningful.
