Boro summer business almost done?

According to the Gazette Boro aren’t looking to pursue any more deals beyond Morris & a striker.

Would you be happy with

Ayling
Burgzorg
Morris
& a striker

Personally, I think there’s a lot more work still to be done. I think even upon signing Morris (if it’s genuine) we need another midfielder, Barlaser isn’t good enough and arguably Howson should be a back-up player if we want to push for promotion.

If we're selling Barlaser, we need another midfielder unless the club are happy to use academy midfielders, and they might well be.

If we're not selling any other key players, I'd say that's all we really need though.

We're sorted for goalkeepers, we're sorted for centre backs, we're sorted at left back even if the club are going after Giles anyway, we're sorted at right back, we'd have plenty of options on the left and right.

If we sign a striker, we're sorted there too.

It's only midfield where we'd only have 3 senior players for 2 positions, assuming a Barlaser sale.

I think that’s part of the issue, are the options on the left and right good enough? We don’t know about Burgzorg but we know Silvera isn’t good enough, Forss struggles to stay fit. Aside from Jones I think we’re pretty light there too.

I think the gazette view is correct, but occasionally opportunity arises and it's too good to turn down, plus if McGree leaves we'll replace him.

Silvera's been settling in to a new league and country and clearly has ability even if he struggles at times.
He's scored some excellent goals for us, despite some absolute stinking shots too.

McGree, Silvera, Forss, Jones, Burgzorg, Gilbert.

That's 6 players for 2 positions.

I agree on the fitness worries for Forss, and you can aim that at McGree too, but I'd assume the club aren't worried about that if we don't sign anyone else there.

The talk was of 4-5 quality recruits to go into the first team.
Still a CF and 10 to go are very least, presuming the yank is any good.
If McGree, Hackney or VdB leave they will also need replacing with high quality. My guess is McGree going and a quality LW/LAM brought in.
The most important recruitment still to do.
Plus moving on those obviously not good enough.
If the club think they are nearly done then we have been.

Hopefully after the last 2 season we’ve learned that some top loans are a good thing along side permanent signings we can sell. Felt a bit like all or nothing one way then the other.

I think that’s excluding departures and anyone out is likely to be replaced.

If McGree goes he will be replaced.
If Barlaser goes he will be replaced
If a left back goes he will be replaced

Same with Hackney or VDB though thankfully seems quiet on them 2 at the moment.

The only departure that wouldn’t be replaced is Dijksteel I expect. As Ayling and Smith should be ample provided Smiths recovery is going to plan it may be a late exit for Dijksteel towards the end of the window just in case.

I very much doubt it.

As it stands, if McGree stays and signs a new contract, I think we have just about enough quality to compete for the play-offs. That seems unambitious to me. If we don't get promoted next season then we will lose Dieng, RVDB, Hackney and Latte Lath at the end of it. Also, likely, Carrick. At that point we risk going a long way back.

I'm pretty sure next season is our best chance of promotion since we blew the parachute money under Monk and Pulis. I would be really surprised if the club don't see it that way as well.

As I see it, Ayling will continue as a starter, Morris will aim to replace Howson by Christmas and Burgzorg is a back-up LW/striker. I think what we need now is a striker who can also play as a #10, and an upgrade for Barlaser (assuming he goes) who can play both Howson's and Hackney's roles as a back-up. I think it is baked into our assumptions that McGree will leave with Azaz in place as his successor.

Last season was a net negative in its own right but we did end up with Dieng, RVDB, Latte Lath and Azaz who are all in a good place to be among the best in the league in their positions next season. Ayling was an unexpected bonus so here's hoping he has another season in him. If we don't build on this with real quality this season, we're just spinning our wheels and hoping.

A season of transition, which makes sense because there are so many question marks over injuries, what to do with emerging players, Howson's longevity etc.

I agree with most but certainly not Azaz.
He’s not better than McGree, who I see as playing left anyway.
We are obviously short of a class starting 10.

We definitely needed to replace McNair, Crooks, Greenwood, Rogers, O'Brien

We have only replaced 2 of those if Morris is included. 3 more signing to come for me.

We have 29 senior pros already, once Morris has signed.

I’d expect Dijksteel, Coulson and Hoppe to leave, plus two of our 5 keepers. So that’s a 24 man squad. It’ll be one in and one out at that point. With McGree and Barlaser both being questions that need resolving.

Currently:

Gk: Dieng, Glover, Jones, Brynn, Hemming

Rb: Ayling, smith, Dijksteel

Lb: Engel, bangura, Coulson

Cb: Rav, Clarke, Lenihan, fry

Cm: Hackney, Morris, Howson, barlaser

Rw: jones, forss

Lw: McGree, silver

10: Azaz, gilbert

Cf: lath, Coburn, bergzorg, Hoppe

With only Bergzorg and morris signings you can say carrick hasn't been backed at all the warchest hasnt been opened and the automatics wont happen. Hugely disappointing

Azaz's main position in his career to date has been playing on the left. He got shoehorned into playing #10 for us when we sold everyone else who could play there and Greenwood also failed at it. I don't massively rate Azaz as a central #10 but he was our only real option there after Crooks and Rogers were sold.

It was a little hard to tell but I think in the last two games of the season, Azaz tended to play left while Gilbert played central and he looked a lot more comfortable there but Carrick does like "fluid" formations.

Don't know how Azaz will develop next season but I think he'll be on a par with McGree. I also don't think Carrick rates McGree that highly or doesn't trust him for some reason. He was first out of the team when we got Ramsey and he seemed reluctant to start him at the beginning of the season.

Personally, I think we need a big improvement on Azaz at #10 if we're to get anywhere. On the other hand I think Azaz can play the wide-left #10 role as well as McGree does.
