Middlesbrough officials are understood to be disappointed at Marcus Tavernier's imminent move to Bournemouth, with the club having done all they can to keep the talented midfielder on Teesside.

Though they were aware of Premier League interest this summer, Boro were determined to keep Tavernier at the club, with Chris Wilder planning to build his team around the 23-year-old.

But it's understood that Tavernier's representatives made it clear that the midfielder wanted the Bournemouth move and pushed for the switch. Boro are understood to have offered Tavernier a new deal this summer and sources tell Teesside Live the club "couldn't have done anymore" to keep the midfielder on Teesside.

But with Tavernier determined to push through the Bournemouth move, Boro reluctantly accepted the Cherries' offer. Reports on Wednesday evening claimed Tavernier was set for a medical at Bournemouth today, with the move expected to be confirmed before the end of the week. Tavernier won't be part of the Boro squad for the Championship opener against West Brom.

Aware of Premier League interest in Tavernier, while doing all they can to keep the midfielder, Boro recruitment chiefs and staff are understood to have planned for his potential departure as best as possible.

The recruitment team are still working around the clock to strengthen the squad, with the confirmed arrival of Marcus Forss a big boost. Boro are looking to bring in two more strikers, with midfielders now also on the to-do list on the back of Martin Payero's loan exit and Tavernier's imminent departure.

This was on the cards last summer. Really we’ve held onto him for an extra season than we expected if truth be told.

Let’s not play the game of an unexpected departure and subsequent pointing the finger at players, managers, fans.. he’s a talented lad who deserves to be playing in the premier league.

Best of luck to him with his career, onwards and upwards. Shame we couldn’t make it and keep hold but on we must go. Hopefully our paths cross in the prem and we can give him a heroes welcome to the riverside.

They're professionals. They do it for the money.

We all know it's pointless trying to keep a player who wants to leave. I think he'd have had 1 year left on his contract at the end of this season, so there was little choice but to take the money now.

It was only last week it was reported that the club had turned down an offer exceeding £10m for him.

I'd say he's told the club this week that he'd like to leave and we've decided to speak to Bournemouth and agree on the deal.

I live near cov (hence the username) lots of my pals are taking the **** out of me presently, saying they thought we were going in all big time trying to sign Gykores and Gayle etc all, and now we can't sign anyone and our best players want out, there having a sweepstake on when Jones goes lol. Hopefully everyone else is just underestimating us!

I had a look on their forum when we were first linked with Gyokeres and the general consensus was that Coventry are nigh on skint. Your mates could be laughing on the other side of their faces come the end of the transfer window! 🤞:ROFLMAO:

Well I don't think we'll be getting gykores but your right, I think we might get a few in and do ok. But I'm keeping very quiet at present as we don't look all that comfortable ourselves just at this moment lol

My issue is the price. He's a mainstay and has gone for less money than a bit part. If they stumped up 15 million off you pop. If not keep him and sell him for 8 in the summer if we don't go up. Tav would have still given 100% if made to stay for another season. He was our player.

Bless him. It must be every pro footballers dream to play top flight football in front of nine thousand passionate fans every other week!
A chance to play in the best league in the world and probably 4x his wage here. I doubt playing in front of 10k less fans than he was here would even come into it

Come on lads, the guy is off to play in the biggest league in the world whilst doubling his wages. Irrespective of playing in front of 9k crowds, who would seriously turn that down? The fee is just about right imho, and to be honest, given the role he plays in the team, you would have expected a better goal and assist return. I hope the money is invested in a proper box to box midfielder who can chip in with goals since we seriously lacked them last season. Tav has been a good pro for us, but it is a good deal all around in my book.

Says it all really. I guess you have to put yourself in his shoes. Personally I don’t believe what the club says (quote” we tried ever so hard”). I’m thinking out loud here that Tav was told a lot of things like us— good signings coming in etc, etc, wishing upon a star lol 😆

However, a week before the season begins and all he sees (and we see) is a few loaners and Lenny come through the door— it’s what we’re used to and of course the old adage “cutting our cloth accordingly”.

Tav (I’m sure) waited until the very last minute to make this decision and based on our summer dealings he basically said ok enough is enough there’s no future in this club, I have to take a chance and leave.

So now he’s going to be a bench player in front (like many have said) an average home gate of 10k — not too sure if I’d have gone for it but perhaps he knows more than we do on the clubs’ finances and transfer kitty.

I don't think footballers care that much about how many fans they'll play in front of. They care far more about: their wages, which competitions they'll be playing in and where they'll be living.

Size of the crowd is a very distant 4th. Occasionally a player will praise it on the way in, but that's just a PR exercise. We, the fans, like to flatter ourselves that we are important to the decision, or that we should be important to it. No better examples than the ugly sisters up the A19.

Totally agree — wages first and the view second or a distant second.
