Brazil v Argentina WC Qualifier

Boos ring around the Maracana as Brazil struggle with the basics of passing. It’s truly been an awful performance

Red card Joelinton for punching Argentina’s De Paul although after seeing the slo-mo it looked like a bit of handbags by both players. Brazil really up against it now with 10 men.

There's a good article in the Athletic about it, but South American qualifiers are really pointless affairs now.

6 teams qualify automatically, and a 7th team can qualify via the play-offs.

There are only 10 teams to begin with.

Brazil have just lost 3 in a row and they're still pretty much guaranteed to qualify, because of how poor a handful of those teams are, and they've got over 2 years until the tournament.
They're below Ecuador, a team with a 3 point deduction, and they're still well on their way to 2026.

Yes I wouldn’t have recommended watching.

First time in history that brazil lost a home World Cup qualifier. Record now 53-13-1…

Agreed.

I'm not in favour of the 48 team WC in the first place.
I'm surprised they don't go to 2 groups of 5. Still, I suppose competative matches are bums on seats £££

Yes that qualifying system is ridiculous. In fact qualifiers for major tournaments are 90pc rubbish now they have greedily expanded the number of teams in the finals. Then you get the Premier League yesterday failing to block teams being able to loan players from sister clubs with the same owners so as to get round FFP. Football is rubbish now …would be better if they let the big clubs b***r off to a Super League
