Breadbuns of Quality

Yes, I know...it's hardly a topic for a Boro messageboard on Friday night (saturday morning) during apendemic

But.

We've decided we want some good carved ham and good fresh granary breadbuns for tea tomorrow - followed by a fresh fruit salad, trouble is that the attempts to buy the breadbuns have produced nothing above very average of late - tried supermarkets and a couple of farm shops.

Any ideas very gratefully received.

Bake your own, you won’t get it right for tomorrow, but once you learn, it’s not hard, you can get them to just how suits you. Plus it’s something to do during lockdown.

Actually yes, thought about this and I'll do it.

But...tomorrow...maybe I'll try but have something as a backup - nil confidence as a baker me!
Makes sense. When you do start to make your own don’t worry how claggy the dough can be at the start when you follow the recipe. Keep kneeding and adding flour, either on the bench or your hands until it ‘looks tight, like the telly’ it seems a mess but it comes right. Good luck 👍👍

M&S Flour dusted white baps are the best supermarket ones you will get.

Making your own is good but they dont last very long. Probably wont be as soft either but will be nice.

Be careful about adding too much flour. If you do they'll be OK when freshly baked, but after that they'll go very dense and not nice at all.

Wetter is better when it comes to dough, though handling sticky dough does take a bit of practice. A bench-scraper (metal or plastic) is a vital tool.

It's probably too far to go for you but anyone in or around Newton Aycliffe will tell you to get your bread buns at Walkers Butchers. They are the perfect bread bun for any sarnie. They also do really good ham as well. I had a couple of ham and pease pudding sarnie from there yesterday. Lovely.

Thomas the Baker in Stokesley. Good bread buns, baguettes are the nearest to French bread I've had outside France (still not the same though) and the Donka bread is fantastic. (y)
