Brighton win in the Ajax Arena.

That a team currently 7th in the premier League is much better than a team currently 11th in the Eredivisie. It's hardly surprising. I would expect the top half Premier League teams to beat all the teams in the Eredivisie.

Boro beating Roma over 2 legs or beating Lazio 2-0 in the Riverside were bigger shocks.

I remember going up to the Riverside from London to watch the game against Brighton when we got promoted. On the way back I was sitting with a group of Brighton fans on the train who were drowning their sorrows. They were a decent bunch and shared their booze with me. When we got off at Kings Cross I went on a pub crawl with them. I reassured them that Brighton would be in the Premier league before long. Funny to see how fortunes change.
I have a soft spot for Brighton too. I lived there for a number of years, still have friends there and had a girlfriend who was a fan. Remember going with her to see them play Man u at the old Goldstone Ground, which coincidentally happened to be Beckham's first game. Remember when they lost their ground and home games were in Maidstone and then Withdean athletic track, and sure that life seems sweet if you followed them through those years. Was great to see them finally get their stadium built after so many years of delay and the fans I chatted to after we beat them 3-0 in the promotion season were friendly and magnanimous. All in all, a thoroughly likable team and I hope they manage to get themselves a trophy one day for those fans after the agony of '...and Smith must score...' which that girlfriend would always go on about.

"...and Smith must score..."

Good post but it was Gillingham, not Maidstone.
