Probably when we didn't have squad numbers in the first division 97-98. When we got promoted in 98 we had Cooper at 28 and Ricard at 19 who were regulars in the line up.

You have to simply credit Burnley with the budget and to think they were Boro's promotion rivels not that long ago. I imagine we've spent more in the same time period.

5 was always a CH, the other wore either 4 or 6, usually 6 as I recall. But you're right Mogga wore 4.

I would say 5 should be the guaranteed centre back, 4 or 6 can play holding midfielder but 5 has to be cb

I read a good article a few days ago about numbers, names and sponsors making their way onto shirts over time.

Interesting how there were always people against every step.

Even in the 90s we were still fielding numbers similar to Burnley today, with only academy kids coming on with random multiples.
