Camping stoves

Never been into camping but we’ve just bought a tent and looking to get away a few times over the summer. Four of us. Probable trips to Europe. Not sure how the fuel systems work here and on the continent! Looked at the simple stuff from go outdoors but still not sure what to get! Any advice appreciated.

Perfect if you are back-packing.

Probably good to check out a few uTube vids comparing camping stoves to get ideas. I did it last autumn just in case the gas crisis was going to cause supply probs. I remember that JetBoil seems to be the Prem player in this space but at 120 quid You can see why. Luckily there's loads of JetBoil immitations on amazon for around 60 quid. I didn't buy in the end , as I didn't know what I wanted .

We went out on the boat yesterday and when we returned a little Esterel Caravan had pitched up and blocked our view of the lake. These are the smallest caravans in the world and he’s pitched it right in front of us. All he other caravans run in the same direction and he’s gone against the grain and put his sideways on. He must have 3 metres from the back of his pitch to the caravan and then half a metre from the front of the caravan to the edge of his pitch.

Anyone normal would utilise all the space.

We asked him politely to move it further in and he sent his wife out to say he would do it ‘le matin.’ No movement yet and he’s got no intention of moving it. His prerogative I guess but even the French are calling him an idiot.

Stoves - It all depends on what you are doing. I would suggest a two burner with a grill to start with and use it with Camoing Gaz. I would also make sure it comes with a wind breaker on the sides to prevent constant blow out. Also make sure you use it off the floor.

If you are going abroad, the bottles can be different and you may need to buy a new regulator to fit if you run out of gas. These are coppers to buy.

Whatever you do, don’t pay for an overpriced Jetboil get a knock off one for a fifth of the price from go outdoors or decathlon.

Pocket rockets are also great.

You could get a full stove from go outdoors though depending on what your needs are.

I have one an it’s a great bit of kit. More suited to boiling water than cooking alth you can get extras to be able to cook on a small pan.
Friend of mine with a green lid recommended one a few years back. The old Trangia is now in the cupboard. (y)

If it's for 4 people and you are wanting to do some cooking I'd recommend a double burner. The campingaz elite double stove is decent for starting out. You'd need a campingaz 904 or 907 bottle to go with it. These are available in the UK but also in Europe so if you did run out of gas while away you'd be able to get a replacement.

10 minutes after posting this message my French neighbour came out, took the legs up on the estrel and moved it further in.

I think he reads FMTTM. 🤣🤣🤣

I have quite a few. If I know there's likely to be available dry twigs and stuff I'll use my biolite. Have a pocket rocket type folding burner and sometimes just take a small, foldable fuuel tablet burner. For some trips I'll use my trangia kit (alcohol burner) with cookware.

Have any of you used the frameless stove to hat works through a chemical reaction?

I tried one on eve whilst on a course and it was really good. I was able to warm my food up whilst putting my tent up. A lot less baggage.

I have a Cadac as linked below. Seems to be sold out ATM mind, but if you can find one then I can't recommend it enough. Add the triple gas cannister holder and you can then use the butane cannisters you can pick up almost anywhere.
