Just walked past my local doctors which I'm not a patient at, absolutely busting for a wee and they refused me entry to use the toilet as they said I had to be a patient. Luckily a restaurant down the road allowed me to use theirs or I'd of ***ed myself. Can a NHS doctors refuse someone to use their toilet?

Just for clarity, do you mean your local doctors house, or his surgery?

If it's the former, they definitely can 😉

Yes they can. I was bursting one day and I went in to my local doctors for a pee , his wife was fuming. Apparently he had gone to work.

'Where is Public Toilet' App is really useful for finding a toilet when in need. You should definitely try it out. AppLink - https://x7agc.app.goo.gl/8KTE

NHS GP surgeries are private businesses that pay their own rent, rates etc. they're not like hospitals whether they're ran by NHS. They're basically independent contractors, tend to band together in partnerships so either form a new one or buy into an existing one, or work their way up in one.

So like any business premises, they can dictate who uses the facilities I guess.

They pay their own rent, rates etc., and charge it straight back to the taxpayer.

Think you'll find it wasn't the Dr but the receptionist who stopped you.
Makes a change for them, from stopping you seeing the GP.
However I would say if it's the policy of the practice,(Receptionist are a law unto themselves)then not illegal but definitely unethical humiliating and cruel!
Perhaps a letter to NHS Commissioners, copying in the practiceif you feel strongly.(I would)

I spoke to an American older guy on a train in Scotland recently and the train toilets were a disgrace. He said where ever he goes, he looks out of the golden M sign and knows he will get a half decent toilet.
For the doctors, I wouldn't have even asked and just gone. I struggled in Redcar at 7pm recently. The "pier" toilets were closed and the bar used the "pier" toilets, the amusements toilets were closed. It was high tide and I stood in the dark having a **** on the beach. Are we in 2023????

We regularly use the health centre toilets in Hebden Bridge, as it's next to where we park. They haven't objected yet. It would be slightly perverse of them to do so I think, as long as you leave them as you find them.

UK public toilets are generally unclean & litter filled - they are a public disgrace. The managed toilets tend to be better kept as people usually have to pay.
All seem to be locked up overnight for the obvious reasons - homelessness & drug users +other nefarious practices after night.
Railway stations & the golden M are my go to emergency loos..

Surely if they sell alcohol they have to have access to a toilet?
