Can anyone actually read the Gazette on their phone?

The app is fine, the website (even with an ad-blocker) is absolutely horrendous.

But as has been said, the content that is on there isn't worth reading anyway.

not sure about the Gazette but this site is really bad for me with adverts atm is there a decent free adblocker for android or something that at least reduces the number of ads

No. Gave up a couple of years ago.
They sold out real journalism for clicks and then made a system where they can’t get clicks as people can’t access.

Good riddance when it disappears down the drain. An aspect of what has driven Teesside to the sorry state it is currently in.

It's just a click bait hellscape now.

Occasionally read the Boro bits, but the echo is the better option and even that isn't great

There’s very little local news in it anymore, the reporters work on laptops at home and send stuff into a hub in Newcastle or Leeds or somewhere so you could have stories from there.

Even the print version is thin compared to the Northern Echo.

When people say click bait, what does this actually mean? I regularly visit the gazette app to catch up on local headlines but only click on the item if it is of interest to myself, by me clicking on some articles do they know how many people have clicked on the news story? Is this click bait or am totally way off??

Posting mini headlines mainly on Social media to make you think “oh I want to read that” and go on the website. Their journos get paid per click I think
(Example below)

The app isn't fine anymore, I used to use it. It now lets you read a few for free then you have to subscribe for a few a month or an annual fee

Clickbait is usually where the title is eithe sensationalised or misleading to make you click it

gazette is mostly the type of click bait where it's compoface and a complaint, or it will say "Martin Lewis says people are missing out on cash with this free tip" whereas before clickbait became vogue it might say "Martin Lewis suggests turning boilers down to 55c", or when you read the article it's made out much more important or interesting than it actually was

Plus they recycle articles every few months, club night photos, work night out photos, anything about Lee Duffy

Media like the gazette is driven by clicks so yes they know what articles you read, what articles everyone reads, what gets people commenting, how many shares, how long spent on the page, how many ads clicked etc as well as what time of day people visit, what browser and device etc

Buzzfeed pioneered this engineer driven approach which has largely made lot of online media a very slimmed down affair - that massive gazette office long gone and its now a small team of <15 remote workers who all have these engagements metrics and will have targets to hit
