Carrick needs to go back to basics

The club is a shambles
Southgate - Play Johnson at Right Wing
Strachan - Play Bennett at Left Back
Mowbray - Play Varga at Right Back
Karanka - Play Fredericks at Right Back
Agnew - 3-5-2
Monk - Play Shotton at Right Back
Pulis - 3-5-2
Woodgate - 3-5-2 play Spence at RWB
Warnock - 3-5-2 remember.. we were like 'play with wingbacks' then we had too
Wilder - 4-4-2.. something not right with Jones
Carrick - 3-5-2 Play Jones at RWB.. something not right with Smith and Dijksteel.

Right Back has been a CONSTANT frustration.. it is like we're cursed. I do think that there is something in the club's DNA that lends itself to 3-5-2
shyte fullbacks and brilliant wingers might be the order of the day (George Friend was ace) we struggle to find a decent number 10.. Ramirez was good for a season as was Akpom
our strikers tend to fall short.. the lone striker is a no go.. midfielders tend to come in exact replica form.. it used to be just 6s and now its just 8s.. although.. Nicky Bailey, Adam Clayton and Johnny Howson all came as 8s.. then we 6'd them.

the future
Agyemang.. classic boro fullback.. will 100% play in midfield
none scoring strikers.. 'split strikers'

Could tho old 3-5-2 have saved Southgate in the premier league?

-------------------Jones---------------------
--------Wheater--Huth--Bates--------------
Hoyte--GON--Digard--Johnson--Downing
-----------Aliadiere--Tuncay----------------

we desperately needed that extra man in midfield.. Johnson, Emnes.. Arca.. was he injured a fair bit?

I wonder what Nemanja Matic would have looked like in 2009... better than Ben Watson I guess

Yeah we have **** right backs and cracking left backs. Even in McLaren's team we bought a Dutch international who played for Barca and he was bobbins. We ended up with parnaby and McMahon playing there instead.

While at left back french frank, ziege, Gordon, liburd and George friend.

I like Smith anyway. Fairly steady. More than competent going forward. Safe bet. Which is what we don't have enough of this year.

The players we have are best suited to 3-5-2, if Carrick and co can’t see that I despair.

Last year’s formation worked because we had Giles and Akpom and neither have been replaced.

We’ve got three reasonably ok centre backs, plus both Dijksteel and Clark coming back. Jones played his best football at wing back alongside Crooks and McGree can play left wing back alongside Hackney. O’Brien or Howson in the centre. The two up top, perm any two from Coburn, Forss and Lath.

Piece of **** this management lark if you want my number Steve😉

If I recall it was the terrible strike force that did for Southgate. We had a couple of draws at home, which if turned into wins would have kept us up. He was badly let down by Mido…..who could have predicted that😂

Mido was a big let down.. Alves needed a Fabio Rochemback.. we needed a Fabio Rochemback... hmm

Aliadiere and Tuncay were brilliant upfront together.

McGee’s jones Hackney and forss as the front 4 obrien and howson behind. Despite what he’s been served up them 6 with lenihan and dieng in the back 4 is a good probably slightly above average championship team stop starting absolute crap like silvera rogers and latth.

The trouble is one of those players we are missing has probably been more important to the way we play than any other player we have had in my entire time watching the club.
More goals than anyone since the 1950s. Half the life of the club. And able to hold the ball and turn which moved us 20 yards up the pitch and allowed us to build and maintain attacking possession.

If you look at our points per game with akpom and without akpom it becomes clear that he was the vital component.

The only comparable situation was when we lost viduka and boateng in one season. Though in truth George had been waning for a little while. I sincerely hope that the club did all it could to keep him at the club, rather than just taking the money to spend on magic beans.
Bit I would also argue that Akpom was involved from April to as was Giles, Archer and Steffen in a team that old not find a way to break a team down or beat them, we ha e changed multiple players which isn't helping but our tactics where clearly worked out and our weakness exploited and as other have suggested if we go back to basics and start by defending for our lives and trying to keep a clean sheet this will help in gaining so confidence and putting some potential wins together, at the minute we are just a soft touch and that was the same towards the tail end of last season where teams worked out how to play against us and we didn't have the nouse to change tactics or shape to counter act our opponents stubborn resistance and this has to lie with the manager and his coaching staff to accept and resolve.

As I have said even though whilst I agree that we have new players so hard to compare the squad to the end of last season we are playing the same way without that little bit of extra quality and still being beat as we where with the gems of last season.

Tactics may need to change to suit the opponent you are facing and exploit there weaknesses week in week out IMO.

I don't think he is.

Steffan was a better keeper and really helped with retaining possession and our attacking play, as he wasn't just happy to receive the ball & pass it on, he was comfortable to hold on to it long enough to draw in a forward to close him down, he then passed it well creating opportunities for overloads further up the pitch.

He's 4th keeper at Man City & working his way back from injury, I'd be happy resigning him in January.
Steffan was a poor keeper, let some shockers in and gave us heart attacks with his lackadaisical style with the ball at his feet, this new lads far better ,

Dieng

Dijksteel RVDB Fry Thomas

Hackney Howson

Jones Azaz McGree

Forss

Play that and we’ll be ok.

No that team was absolute dog shît nothing could have saved it

Just play the players from last year

No fancy stuff

Nick a 0 0 and go from there
It worked last time.
We were 7 games beaten and he shot McGree, Crooks. Howson and Forss in ti save the day.

He stuck O'Brien at Left Back and git Engel out.

Some of those options are gone now. But if he gets Engel out for Thomas and sticks Howson back in for Barlaser I think we'll see an improvement.

I would love to know the truth with McGree but if he's fit and he gets him in as well we'll.be cooking on gas

That's just another reflection on the recruitment. Carrick has a clear preferred system. But we've recruited the wrong players to suit it.

Who's at fault? Scott for getting the wring players? Or Carrick for not adapting his system? That's up to Gibbo. But for me, we've brought dogshit players in and expected Carrick to perform miracles
