Carrick

I am losing faith in Carrick you know I don't feel he is getting the best out the side. I felt he set us up totally wrong today. We had a full week on the training ground against a side who played 120 mins midweek in the cup. Yet we looked like we were the knackered ones in that opening half completely off the pace.

People give him credit for last seasons playoff push but I feel he failed in our best opportunity to go up as we had the best attack and side in the playoffs but we failed to deliver.

When Woodgate was appointed, a lot of fans believed that an experienced coach was also going to be appointed, to guide and advise Woodgate and Carrick.

I believe that needs to happen. Carrick is still learning on the job and he's literally only got Woodgate as his confidant and advisor on a matchday.
 
The thing that annoys me most about him is his inability or stubbornness to changes tactics during the game if we're being outplayed.

Mark Robins gave him a lesson in that last year but he still refuses to budge on plan A.

Injuries forced him to play wingbacks against Villa and Chelsea and we looked very solid. Why not adopt it mid-championship game when things aren't going right? Keep the opposition guessing.
 
I'm afraid that Carrick is out of ideas for the squad he is now faced with.
His club selling players with at least some character without replacing them is no help. Half a dozen 'permanately injured' players don't help either but even when he has 'options' (you'll remember he has plenty of them - Carrick's own words) his stubborness prevents him from using them. They say that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is a definition of madness - well - Greenwood is NOT a striker (Leeeds warned us) although Forss just might be. Ayling is finished but we have a pretty mobile replecement in Dijksteel. Fry looks like he's frozen with fear when he receives the ball - guess where it usually goes next. Yes, v.d.Berg or Glover. It's like someone pressed "Pause" every time he gets it. Hackney is poor right now but hardly knows where he's expected to be from half to half. We've needed a strong defensive midfielder for two years and we can lay that blame with recruitment but to play Barlaser there who's weak and ineffective is Carrick's choice. Who knows what Carrick's problem is with McGree and Dijksteel?
 
The first half was shambolic because we didnt control central midfield, which I think is key to our passing game. Things improved in the second half when Hackney was put back in his rightful position. No mention of this by Carrick in his post match interview where he just seemed to be saying that we lost because it is just what happens sometimes. I am still puzzled by the fact that he does not play Forss down the middle in the current circumstances.
 
The team selection was nowhere near as concerning for me as the tactics. Their defenders were up to the half way line. We had no space. Yet we kept playing short passes into the middle.

Put some pace up front. Knock it over the top a couple of times. Create some space by pushing the defence back.

We were lucky they let us off by sitting back as it could have been 3 or 4.

Good points but who have we got with pace to run in behind?

The Leeds fans I know warned me he doesn't have an obvious position. And I get that. He has talent, but let's be honest what position on the pitch is his best? And is he first choice there?

It feels like he's just filled in all season.

I think he did well on the left.. then in the middle as a 10 he was ok.. I like him.

I'm not getting at him. I actually don't mind him either. He's feisty and has a bit of talent

But

Is he better than mcgree on the left? No

Is he better than Crooks/Rogers at no10? No (TBC if he's better than azaz)

He's playing ST because we have no one else
 
He does seem very stubborn in his ways. We have a striker crisis and the best finisher at the club is poncing about on the right wing. I just don’t get that decision at all - and playing Azaz and Hackney in positions that aren’t their best is also baffling. As for McGree not starting and Thomas not coming in for Engel 😳
