Anyone had any dealings with them?

Just tried to offload a laptop for (what seemed) like a fair price. Price quoted upon receiving the laptop was 25% less than original quote, reason given that the operating system is actually newer/better spec than I'd suggested! Questioning via email went absolutely nowhere so item will be returned. Seems an odd commercial model given it was for vouchers to spend with them anyway.

Any other suggestions for places to sell? Ebay is an option but fairly involved.

100% Facebook marketplace. No fees, no backsies, plenty of scammers and tyre kickers but easy enough to ignore

I made a fortune out of Cex when graphics cards and PlayStations were hard to come by, but in general it's an awful company and the staff are weird.

music magpie or go to CEX in person
I did wonder if I might get a different offer in store. Do they manage them as distinct business units?

In the nicest possible way it seems like they prey on people's need for a quick buck. I would like to sell, but on my terms, hence not agreeing to an artificially lower price.

The stock they sell online is allocated to a store

I think the things they buy are specific to an item. Is your software a self upgrade? They basically check it against a criteria e.g when I sold some steam decks they had to check that you could sign into steam. With ps5 they made sure the vertical mount no one uses was in the box etc

Maybe stores might work differently but id expect it to be the same criteria

They generally offer you less than it's worth as they sell with a markup e.g i was making £200-300 per ps5/xbox and £400 or so on graphics cards, i could have got a lot more private sale but my girlfriend was getting pissy with me that people were turning up with wads of cash at all hours and Cex was a quick turnaround

So you were one of the scalpers that caused inflation for everyone?

May be a bit harsh and outta character for me that. I rescind.

I traded my old iPhone to CEX in the town last summer. Put in that it was on EE when I agreed the trade online but they found it to be “unlocked” when I got there. Got £40 more than quoted!!
Got TLOU Part 1 and a couple of other PS5 games for it instead of the cash.

I didn't cause inflation for anyone. No one has to buy a ps5 or a graphics card. if they decide they want it instantly i can get them one pretty quickly and cheaper than most sellers because I've been doing it for 20 years so know when & where to look and which items are going to be stock limited or they can wait for retail stock which lands daily and is pretty easy to get.

Fact is they will be competing with bots going forward and they can interact with the stores API faster than any human can check out, but still not that hard to get these items.

Yep, to be fair the prices they buy (and sell) at are in the original listing but they had "downgraded" mine when they received it.

I'd actually made an error when listing it, selected W10 when it's actually W11. Apparently this is less desirable, hence the price drop.

I actually think they probably just find any reason to adjust the quote downwards hoping most people either won't care or be bothered to request it posted back.

When I went online to find the adjusted price for W11, surprise surprise, it wasn't there.

Heard a few horror stories of people getting items posted back damaged so I always went into the shop, which is always an eye opening experience. If you ever see any of the TikTok's about CEX they're bang on the money.

The tech staff in the Boro branch aren't the brightest either.

Once bought a 2nd hand 16gb microSD card from them and they hadn't bothered to format it, it was full of personal information
