Changing Car

Evening all.

Looking to change my car as had it for 6 years and bored of driving a dad bus. Got a 5+2 seat MPV at the moment which I had as a company car then bought, was the right car for a while but now I fancy something a bit different.

Considered a few (reluctantly ruled out the F Type though) and have decided I like a higher driving position, comfortable seats and a car that fits 5 adults in comfortably so looks like an SUV. Budget circa £16k plus around £6k trade in so quite decent.

I would quite like a Velar as had one on a 4 day test drive and loved the car, but high residuals means out of price range - so that’s out. Not keen on the Beemers nor Audis, others I’ve looked at include;

Evoque - prefer the new model again out of range
Tucson - too big
Qashqai - but it’s a Datsun!
X trail - as per the above 2

So the one that’s caught my eye is the Alfa Stelvio. Only had an Alfa for 3 weeks when mine was in for repair, a Giuletta that I was gutted to give back as it was a great car to drive. Also a little bit different and rare, seem like the residuals aren’t good in the first couple of years so some decent prices for low mileage, 2 year old cars.....but, everyone knows the stories about Alfa.

So, long story short. Head says loaded up 2 year old Qashqai, reliable, good build quality, will make me feel 70. Heart says Alfa, maybe not reliable, questionable build quality (or is this a myth these days), will make me feel more like my actual age (35 😂).

Honestly, choosing a car is the worst decision anyone can make. Please help....

Mrs waiting for delivery of an XC 40 - its pound for pound the best value small MPV I think.

Evoque is nice, but overpriced I think. Stelvio is a cracking car, but it's bigger than the XC$0/Evoque and it will depreciate rapidly, unless you lease, but even that will be expensive for the same reason.

I saw a Alfa Stelvio out walking, and the owner was near it. It looked absolutely brilliant and I told him so. Very classy indeed. I've no idea of reliability etc, but for looks it a 10 out of 10 for me. There are no bad cars on the road nowadays, just some are better than others in my opinion.

Second hand and will probably have for 4/5 years so assuming depreciation won’t be as bad.

Honestly it should be a choice of hatchback, estate, SUV, MPV or sports car. Colour, silver or silver, fuel petrol or diesel.

A friend went for a very well equipped Mazda CX5 last year after initially wanting a Q5 and it's a lovely car at a slightly lower price.

I've had a Kuga X Sport for a few years now and it's the most reliable car I've had. Still enjoy driving it.

How about a nice Vauxhall Insignia or Ford Mondeo? Could pick up a decent spec with your budget. (I know they are the antithesis of desirable brands , but when you're inside driving, it feels like you're in a nice car)!

Just a thought. Get more spec for your buck. (y)(y)

Had an Insignia elite; fantastic car to drive, brilliant on long and short journeys and all the extras you could want.

Considered estates but just would prefer a higher driving position. I don’t like the look of the a Kuga, but had an S Max a few years ago and loved it.

Mazda CX 5 not considered, will have a look.

I've got the Mazda CX5 top spec and I love it. Only problem is theres no where to go in it .

I bought a new motor yesterday. It was all pretty seamless despite the covid issues. Although not very 'family' oriontated as a Mk8 Fiesta ST. I'm having a mid life crises (also it's one of the most stolen cars in Britain)

I reserved online and picked it up 3 days later. You get 3 hours 'test drive' where they don't send off any paper work or process the payment so you can return it. The only thing I had to do was pay the tax. The 4 day drive away insurance is also free (with ford).

It's actually far better. No salesmen trying to sell you paint protection or insurance etc. They email to you and you just reject it. I was in and out on 15mins. They also did the quickest trade in appresal ever. He drove my car 10 yards and looked around my for 1 minute and gave me what I wanted. No looking at chips going 'oh that will cost £100 to remove' 😂.

I was also suprised as the car I bought had extras on it that weren't listed on the auto trader advert. It was an ex demo so 'fully loaded' with reversing camera and all the optional packs. Although trying to describe them to Admiral insurance was a mission. I suggest they employ people with at least a bit of car knowledge.

When you choose you could have a look on Car Gurus. Got my last 2 through being listed on there - saved quite a few quid too!
