I caught a bit of Channel 5 News today about deprivation in Middlesbrough (about 5.25pm). They are doing a series of special 5 minute reports this week on how people are managing to live in Middlesbrough in the current economic climate. Today it followed the White Feather Project an aorganisation that helps keep people alive by distributing food and some care. I can see them driving a van through Brambles Farm and a 1970s estate. They were giving out bags of food at very low prices. They interviewed a middle aged guy who was recovering from an operation and so could not work. He received £251 a month to live on in benefits (£8.36 a day). He said he was eating only one meal a day and had lost 1.5 stones in weight recently. He could only afford to have heating on for 3 hours a day. It said many getting help were working full time.
Tommorow is about cost of living.
Well done to the White Feather Project - they will be keeping some people alive this winter.
