Club merchandise

I was paying a rare visit to Teesside this weekend so called into the club shop on Monday. I was hoping to pick up the away or third shirt or perhaps one of the walk-out jackets. I didn't have high-hopes as I knew they'd been popular on release and so wasn't really surprised to see that there was either none (third shirt, away walk-out jacket) or very limited sizes (away shirt, home walk-out jacket). What did surprise me was that when I asked when they were expecting more in the girl said they aren't!

I know there has been supply issues but it seems crazy that we're only in October and there will be no more away or third shirts (which both seemed to be very well received on release). Surely there must be a big market for people getting Boro shirts for Christmas if nothing else?

Imagine thinking you could buy boro merch from the one place that sells boro merch!!

They never have any gear in and ordering stuff is frowned upon!

They usually runout by Jan. Then say 'no point in ordering more as changing in May'. That's bad enough.

This is taking it to the next level 😂

I know, what an idiot eh? i didn't have high hopes as I said. I can recall previous seasons where they've run out of stock and having to wait for more to come in but i can't remember one where it was so early in the season to be told there won't be any more coming in at all. I would have though shirt sales are a big percentage of our commercial revenue (with a peak at Christmas)?

as an infrequent visitor too I feel your pain

I wanted the third shirt but it was only available in XXXXL when came up for Blackburn.

Suppose I could have used it as a tent.

Hopeless.

Don't know about losing money but the way it's run you'd think it was a massive inconvenience to them having to provide it.

In fact it sometimes feels like the fans are a bit of an inconvenience to the club full stop.

Given the shirts weren't available at all (unless you got in quick or pre-ordered) until what? September? That means most fans have had a 2 month window to get one? Brilliant 😂🤦‍♂️

I believe there are still supply problems with football kits and it's not just us having the problems. Manufacturing in China and elsewhere is being hit by problems either directly or as a consequence of COVID.

The way the club shop is run just highlights what an amateur setup we have. When people talk about the ticket prices and think the club have some perfect model for working out how much to charge all you need to do is reference the club shop. They are hopeless. Every season we either run out by August or have a huge stock we can't shift and I think it is because we try to do it on the super cheap and make one single order instead of agreeing to order in batches as and when we need them. Penny pinching means missing out on £s.

I'm not paying £50 for a shirt on launch day but I will buy one, maybe both home and away if they are on half price at the end of the season. I'll also buy them for the kids. I would guess the cost price for the kit is quite low so they still make a decent profit at half price. They are losing out on probably £100 from me when they don't have enough to put on sale, that's on top of all the people that wanted to pay full price and couldn't and I bet there are a lot of fans like me.

One of the main reasons I won't pay £50 on release is because I refuse to pay £6 for delivery. That price is a joke. It means I never buy anything from MFC, despite wanting to, because I don't live local. If I want a £12 hat it will cost me £18. If I want a £50 shirt it'll cost me £56. It's just a dreadful service and another kick in the teeth for anyone that doesn't live local.

I give up with the club shop. Prices are an absolute disgrace. Never have anything in stock. This year I've ordered my 2 kids the home kit from a chinese website. Didn't really have an option as they didn't have either of their sizes in stock in the club shop . £12 for the full kit delivered! An absolute brilliant copy too. I know a lot of other parents at the kids' football teams who are doing the same.

What's the site? My kids are too young to care whether they are official or not? PM me if it's not allowed to be shared publicly.

Working in the retail world, and briefly worked with a few clubs albeit a long time ago, I've so many questions about how the club run the shop and how decisions are made around stock. pricing etc.

Would love to see what the set up is at the club, or maybe I wouldn't actually.

I don't think the nationwide supply issue has gone away. One Championship club didn't even have their match day strips ready for the first team photos pre season. Horrendous problems this year getting kits from the Far East.

That might be the issue this year but they have the issue every year. They never get the stock levels right. The rest of it, the prices, delivery costs, quality of product etc is just further evidence of poor business.
