Coast to Coast Cycling

Whitehaven to Roker. Assuming some of you have done this. Experiences please, nice leisurely cycle over 2 or 3 days and camping enroute either 1 or 2 nights. Thinking of doing it with my brother. A few pubs enroute would be great. Any advice appreciated. The last few years I have cycled Bournemouth to Eastbourne a few times camping enroute

Did that route years ago on a dual suspension mountain bike. Was the worst experience of my life.

Drinks bladder burst coming out of Whitehaven so only had whiskey hip flask until Penrith. Hadn't trained for the amount of inclines that I experienced.

Best part was riding the bike down the beach at Roker and straight into the sea followed by taking the bike to the tip

Did Whitehaven to Tynemouth.
Something I found out - dont try it in February when its icey, cold and damp.
Did it in three stages:
Whitehaven - Langwathby.
Langwathby - Stanhope.
Stanhope - Tynemouth.

If you get the chance - stop for a brew and a cake at The Chatterbox Cafe at St Johns Chapel in Weardale [https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Resta...e-St_John_s_Chapel_County_Durham_England.html]

Enjoy it (y)

Done some similar ones but different start and end point

I found Carlton bank good training but it's ridiculously short compared to some of the long slogs but the steep incline gives good practice and cardio.

Don't be tempted to have something big to eat in Ambleside if you go through there as the massive hill starts 30 seconds later 😂

I did it with two workmates in 2012, weather was horrendous (picture is midsummer day!) 2nd day obviously the hardest with the climbs. We stayed in a b&b in Penrith after day 1 and then 2nd night at the station hotel at the top of Crawleyside bank, they were very welcoming to cyclists. 3rd day was a gentle half day into Roker.
Enjoy.

Doing it in a DAF lorry doesn't count Bob 🤣

Sounds terrible experience. Way of the roses easier. The inclines arent that big tbh.

Ridden this route years ago over 3 days. Quite hilly in the middle but the final day was a joy, mainly on cycle paths and downhill into Sunderland.

We were a bit hungover on days 2 and 3. Stayed in B&Bs in Penrith and Stanhope. It is certainly a doable ride with not much training over 3 days. Not much effort required on Day 3. Days 1 and 2 are hilly though but manageable if you go steady away.

Did Workington to Tynemouth a few years ago over 3 days. It was a great experience. You think Hartside is going to be the toughest bit but if you do the route we did - stopping off in Stanhope - then there's a brutal section, at least for the inexperienced rider, around Allenheads.

There's a great descent after that rolling in to Stanhope.

Its a bugga when you hit Nenthead on the way up that climb to the Cumbria / Durham border - especially that left-hand turn at the top which goes from a comfortable 1 in 10 to about 1 in 5 for a few hundred yards! The "Waskerley Way" out of Stanhope - until I reached the top - had to get off and push! It was great heading round Consett and down the Derwent Valley - never thought I`de enjoying seeing Gateshead so much!🚴‍♂️

Before I came back home I did the Way of the Roses from Morecambe to Bridlington. Fantastic route.

I did this route 3 weeks ago at a leisurely pace over 3 days and camped at pateley bridge (camping on first night) and Youth hostel in York on the Second night. It’s a lovely ride and if you do it over 3 days you have plenty of time to take detours to visit sites on the route.
Just did the Ravenglass to Siloth to Tynemouth this weekend over 3 days. Another stunning ride and you follow Hadriands wall.
Both of the routes are not as brutal as the Whitehaven - roker route which I didn’t find as enjoyable.
Ravenglass to Tynemouth
Day1
Day 2
Day3

Did both on gravel bike but my mate did it on a road bike with 700x30 with no issues.

Were you riding one of these?

I was wonderign if its possibel to do the coast 2 Coast in a Kayak via rivers and canals etc.

It seems like you can go from Liverpool to Goole via the Liverpool Leeds canal, then the Calder, but wondered if there was a more northern route that hooks into the Tees.

Nenthead, that's the bit I'm talking about. Horrendous. That's the only section in the whole weekend where I had to get off and walk for a bit.

I made it up the Waskerley Way without getting off, and then it is a lovely track through to Consett.

I'm doing it this weekend over two days.

I've booked into the Nent Hall Hotel as I wanted a nice big bed to myself and bath.

Loads of pubs along the route don't get too ***ed though and make the same mistake I have in the past. It makes it a lot harder to ride up those hills as they seemed unrelenting the more ***ed I got 🤦

I ended up in the support van and I was enjoying the ale more than riding

I'm not a cyclist, but I see they've recently opened up a new route from plymouth, to the north coast of devon, might be worth doing - you'd probly do it in a day!

Both ends of this are very good
Bideford to Ilfracombe
Bideford to Okehampton
Plymouth northwards, all nice day rides
but the middle bit was too fiddly

The cornish coast to coast and back is a day ride.
Devoran to Porthtowan via Scorrier, which is where we started from.

Done it three times Workington to Roker and Workington to tynemouth, also done the longer Reevers route via Kielder.

One piece of advice - get plenty of hills in during your training.

Greystokes is a good stop off, Boot & shoe pub is great.

Can highly recommend the Boot and Shoe at Greystoke (3 or 4 miles before Penrith). Very nice Guinness and not too far to cycle after if you're staying near Penrith.
